DUP source adds its response to the NI Protocol was graduated... first pulling NSMC co-operation, then checks & finally resigning the FM position. Suggests party may employ a staged response to government actions, although no definitive decisions have been taken yet.

It's possible that the legislation could be put through on accelerated passage, but one govt source tells me it is probably more preferable to allow the bill to be properly scrutinised so there can be no suggestion it is being "railroaded" through Parliament.

The bill will be published & laid by early June. In the meantime the govt will attempt to keep open communication channels with the EU to try to reach agreement - meaning unilateral action will no longer be required.

The bill is expected to announce the government is to stop SPS checks on goods travelling solely GB to NI as well as removing ECJ jurisdiction.
A final decision on whether or not to trigger Art 16 has still to be made.
