Here we are: publication day for FULFILLMENT: Winning & Losing in One-Click America. I've been working on the book for 3 yrs, but it stretches much further back. It grew out of years of reporting across the country and being overwhelmed by the regional disparities on display.🧵

Last week, I ordered what looked to be a really nice short sleeved tee shirt. I want to stress that it was supposed to have **short sleeves**, because what arrived instead is maybe the single most astonishing and baffling article of clothing I have ever handled.

“I wanted to report this story last month, but I was too sick with COVID. My kid gave it to me.” I think it’s really weird for adults to blame children for making them sick with this kind of language. npr.org/sections/health-shot…

My school doesn’t have a grammar curriculum, so I bought a textbook, and I’m so excited to teach it. My students actually seem pretty excited about it too. Their grammar is lacking, they know it, and they *want* to write better

I’m on an uptown 1 train and someone is openly smoking a joint and cursing at people who look in his direction. In my 15 years riding the subway daily, I don’t remember seeing this, much less in the middle of rush hour. Is it just me, or are the subways becoming more lawless?

The French thing is funny, but it's really something how so much of the progressive language game is based on a bizarre, unsupported, and probably false theory of how specifics of English grammar mold our thoughts.

Sibylle, sometimes referred to as East Germany's Vogue, was a popular bimonthly fashion magazine in the GDR. Its annual circulation of 200,000 usually sold out quickly. One of its hallmarks was interesting photography like this one by Günter Rössler taken in East Berlin in 1963.

I-94 between Minneapolis and St. Paul is a freeway that rightly doesn’t deserve a future. Reimagining a future without grade separated highways in our cities is a really bright one.
