.@brianoftoole and I assess the new sanctions policy document that Treasury put out this week. Sensible and solid. Now they need to put it to work. @ACGeoEcon @petereharrell
"The review is smart in addressing the true root causes of sanctions misuse without indulging in clichés such as that sanctions are overused or never work," @AmbDanFried + @brianoftoole assert. atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ne…

Russia has curtailed ties with NATO, is using gas as a weapon against Europe (Germany included), and is threatening Ukraine (Putin suggested that an "accident" could befall Ukraine's gas pipeline.) Need to see US-Russia cooperation (even if real) in this context. @ARVershbow
All true, which makes today's "US-Russia thaw" piece by @IgnatiusPost in today's "WP" striking. And odd. I'm all for US-Russia cooperation if real (and cyber cooperation would be a welcome change if, again, it's real). But I'd temper my enthusiasm. @ACEurasia

In last few days, Putin has severed ties with NATO, said he won’t appear at G20 summit or Glasgow’s COP-26 and won’t release new gas supplies to ease Europe’s crunch. These signals are ominous.

For our International Interview, I spoke with @AmbDanFried about why good US-Poland relations should matter to the Biden administration (and how to make them better). There's video, too! Read, or watch, here: newstatesman.com/the-interna…

.@NTenzer assesses the sometimes patronizing West European attitude toward Central and Eastern Europe while clear about problems within CEE. Wise and thoughtful (sometimes applies to US, too). @ACEurope @KDonfried
My 32nd long paper on my strategy blog criticizes the trial of illegitimacy often made to the countries of Central and Eastern #Europe. They are, as much as Western Europe, an integral part of the #EU. It's high time to consider what they have to teach us. tenzerstrategics.substack.co…

Great piece by @SlawomirDebski. Really interesting to see both the commonalities w/ French positions as well as the disagreements. Useful to understand what "strategic autonomy as seen from Poland" looks like if we truly want to deepen European dialogue. notesfrompoland.com/2021/10/…

Chris Hill is an excellent choice for ambassador to Serbia. Knowledge, experience, policy savvy. @ACEurope @cepa
Biden has nominated Christopher Hill, the former US ambassador to be next US ambassador to Serbia. Hill is a retired career diplomat who previously served as US ambassador to Iraq, Korea, Poland and Macedonia, and as assistant secretary of state for East Asian & Pacific affairs

Putin suggests an “accident” may befall Ukraine’s gas pipeline. Experience suggests Putin’s threats, esp. against Ukraine, tend to foreshadow action. Now would be a good time for US & Germany to caution the Kremlin re new aggression. @UnderSecStateP @ACEurasia @amoshochstein

Not so many years ago, some US observers of Russia believed that Medvedev represented a new, modern generation of Russian leaders. That generation may yet emerge. But that's not Medvedev and never was.
The Kremlin 🇷🇺 view of 🇺🇦 is hardening substantially. After the Putin essay questioning the very concept of a 🇺🇦 independent of 🇷🇺, Medvedev is now joining in, calling Kiev just a “vassal” of 🇺🇸 and saying that talks are useless. themoscowtimes.com/2021/10/1…

Indeed, I understand that the visa reciprocity deal with Russia did not involve a sanctioned person (Specially Designated Nation) but someone who was subject to a visa ban only. Big difference. @tashecon
And before people fly off the handle, what’s being referenced, if it’s even true, is a visa ban, not financial sanctions. Very different animal.

Thoughtful suggestions as always from @ARVershbow and Hans Binnendijk, this time on how to make “strategic autonomy” something of value for the transatlantic relationship and all of Europe.

“This is our Europe.” It is indeed. Some of the power of this evening’s pro-EU demonstration in Warsaw comes from the history of Poles fighting for their country in a democratic Europe and achieving it after great sacrifice.
Incredibly powerful moment at the anti-Polexit protest in Warsaw just now as two Warsaw Uprising veterans take to the stage. "We have always been in Europe, no one will take us out. This is our Europe". #zostajeMYwUE

Given @UnderSecStateP’s track record of knowledge about & toughness toward Putin’s aggression, this reciprocity deal for her to get a Russia visa may not come out in the Kremlin’s favor. @A_Sloat @KDonfried @ACEurasia
This is absurd! US excluded a Russian from sanctions list in exchange for Russia lifting sanctions on Nuland to travel to Moscow this week for meetings. Are we going to get more bs “assurances” while the Kremlin increases their multi faceted attacks on us? ria.ru/20211010/sanktsii-175…

In Czechia, a populist/billionaire leader loses an election to a liberal coalition. Next government not clear and may take months to form. But narrative that populism + authoritarianism + corruption = Central Europe’s future takes a hit.
