I am beyond excited that I will get to serve with Mayor @AmarjeetSohiYEG for the next 4 years. He is someone that leads with compassion and kindness which is exactly what Edmonton needs as we work through some very complex challenges. #yeg #yegcc #yegvote

I realize it鈥檚 short notice so if no one sends me a message, I鈥檒l head out an hour early. Also, I鈥檒l probably be outside since it鈥檚 looking nice out so if you want to come by, bring a hat and wear your sunscreen.

Minister @jasonluan88: Is that $29 million new funding or is that the same compared to previous years? There are 500 new units ready to open this year and if you are providing new funding for those units, I鈥檇 like to thank you for this new announcement. #ableg #abpoli #yegcc #yeg
Replying to @jasonluan88
The City of Edmonton receives over $40M to help homeless Albertans. This includes the $29M we provide to Homeward Trust Edmonton to provide funding to operate more than 400 supportive housing units, which includes the new supportive housing units opening this year. 4/5

If this is the same amount as previous years, I鈥檓 not sure how that would apply to the 500 new units that are ready to open in a few months. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Even though it has been approved for more than a year and construction is already underway, it was an exciting day as it was the official groundbreaking for Valley Line West LRT. I鈥檒l have more to say about this later but I wanted to share the great news. #yeg #yegcc #yegtransit
馃У I鈥檓 so pleased to see the Valley Line West LRT reach this groundbreaking milestone. The LRT is a highly effective, accessible and environmentally-friendly way to connect Edmontonians to where they want to go. #YEG #YEGcc

In total, there are over 500 units of supportive housing that should be open in the next few months. But even though we have taken over the cost of the building of these units, the provincial government is responsible for funding the operations of these units.

To date, there has been no commitment to fund the operations of these new units which means it is possible that these units could be ready to support those experiencing houselessness but unable to actually start helping.

By not allowing 500 of the hardest to house Edmontonians to access the support and care they need, they will continue to live on the street which is the worst option for them and it doesn鈥檛 help the communities that are home to the encampments.

Creating a public safety plan is something that we鈥檝e already done. Now it鈥檚 time for the provincial government to do their part and help address the areas that they are responsible for.

If they aren鈥檛 interested in doing that, they should consider turning over the jurisdiction and funding of those important areas to the municipalities so we can thoroughly and quickly address the challenges before us.

I鈥檓 not interested in passing the buck because that doesn鈥檛 help. I鈥檓 interested in ensuring the safety and well-being of all Edmontonians. It鈥檚 time to stop talking and sending letters, it鈥檚 time for provincial action to match the action we have taken in the city.

I know this thread doesn鈥檛 even cover important issues like proper shelter spaces and having the provincial government enact the shelter standards created by the city as we cannot require operators to use them. This thread was long enough but I know there is more to cover.
