When they lie to the Congress, they lie to the people. Their legitimacy depends on the consent of the governed. When they manufacture that consent through deception, they destroy their own legitimacy. These people have broken a fundamental contract underpinning our democracy.
What does it mean for rule of law in America if nominees to the Supreme Court feel free to say things that they may not actually believe during public confirmation hearings and to Senators in private as a tactic to get confirmed?
