We are also calling for a school district investigation into allegations that Rezwan experienced severe school bullying due to his faith and ethnicity, and any causal relationship that bullying may have had with his death. 2/6
Rezwan and his family arrived in Missouri as refugees. They reportedly struggled to adjust to life in their new home, where they were one of few Muslim families in the area. Linguistic and cultural barriers made transitioning difficult. 3/6
Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. Thousands of recently arrived Afghan refugees are receiving insufficient support from refugee agencies and the government. Too many refugees aren't getting the tools they need to learn English, find jobs, & adjust to their new lives. 4/6
The shocking, tragic death of Rezwan Kohistani must be a wake-up call. Our government must do more to ensure that newly arrived Afghans receive the assistance they need. 5/6
