Over the past 24 hours, we ID’d 3,592 new cases & completed 10,572 tests. Our positivity rate was 35.3 %. Sadly, 8 new COVID-related deaths were reported to AB Health in the last 24hrs. Each life lost to this virus reminds us this virus still presents a very real threat. (2/8)

I am hearing questions about the vaccination status of patients hospitalized due to COVID during this 5th wave. It’s important to remember the number of vaccinated people in AB is many times higher than the number of the unvaccinated (4/8)

With the exponential spread of Omicron, more people are getting sick than at any other point in the pandemic so it is not surprising to see an increase of hospitalizations, even in some who have been partially or fully immunized.(5/8)

However, data shows vaccinated Albertans are at much less risk of getting severely ill. In the last few months those who are 80 + w/ 3 doses of vaccine have had a lower risk of hospitalization from COVID than unvaccinated 12 to 29 year olds. (6/8)

Looking at all age groups combined, in the last several months, those who do not have any vaccine protection were about 15 times more likely to be hospitalized than those with 3 doses, & 7 times more likely than those with 2 doses.(7/8)

Vaccines – especially 3 doses – are very effective at preventing severe illness and death. That’s why I continue to urge every Albertan 5 years of age & older to get all vaccine doses they are eligible for: alberta.ca/vaccine (8/8)

Previous infection does not guarantee lasting immunity. To get the best protection, get vaccinated if you have recovered from COVID-19. Questions? Check out our FAQ here: bit.ly/34W6kUk

It’s good news Health Canada has authorized a new prescription drug product for treatment of COVID at home. This will help keep more Albertans 18 years & older who have mild to moderate cases of COVID-19 from becoming seriously ill or requiring hospitalization. (4/7)

We’re reviewing Health Canada’s guidelines and working with clinicians to determine eligibility criteria & an efficient process to prescribe it. Initial supply will be very limited & we want to make sure the drug goes to those who will benefit the most. (5/7)

We expect eligibility to include adult Albertans w/ symptomatic COVID infection, confirmed by testing & who are at high risk of progressing to serious disease. We’ll share more information as soon as we can. (6/7)

It is important to do everything we can to slow transmission in our communities. Get immunized and stay home & away from others when sick, especially from those who are too young to be vaccinated. (7/7)

You cannot predict how far your infection will spread through others through an ongoing chain of transmission, or who it will reach. Unfortunately, at some point, it will likely reach someone for whom COVID-19 is not a mild illness. (6/7)

I’m asking all Albertans to remain vigilant as we are all connected to each other, those we know & those we don’t know. The actions we take every day make a difference. Please help reduce the spread by booking your vaccine & following all health measures. (7/7)
