Also Elliot Richardson, who had been MA AG before serving in the Nixon and Ford admins in the '70s, later lost MA GOP primary for the US Senate in '84. The last AG to seek and win higher office in MA was Ed Brooke, elected to the US Senate in '66.

Ed Brooke was a celebrity after the Boston Strangler and was buddies with both parties. In fact, he ran in BOTH primaries in 1960?? for house.
