So the author of today’s terrible habeas opinion, Clarence Thomas, does not believe in the landmark Gideon case and thinks the Constitution only guarantees you a lawyer if you can afford it. Really. So today’s absurd decision maybe should be seen in that light (or darkness).

In the first quarter of 2022, the small oligopoly of global ocean shipping companies earned $59.3 billion in profit. It was a new record. They expect $220 billion for the year. Some economists are still talking about $1,400 checks from 14 months ago. gcaptain.com/container-shipp…

What pundits with big platforms should do, rather than naively taking allegations of “divisiveness” at face value, is to seriously investigate what the conservative vision of “unity” is and what exactly the policies and ideas are that the Right has always disavowed as “divisive.”
1) Voting for Republicans in the age of Donald Trump because they are supposedly the "kinder" party is absurd. 2) Democrats should seriously introspect about why, despite Trump, so many people perceive them as unkind and divisive. Winning the 2024 election may depend on it.

One of the many reasons why a generational shift in politics is necessary: If your political "coming of age" happened in the last 20ish years, you inherently understand the GOP is simply not on the level.
Replying to @ryanlcooper
the democratic party’s geriatric leadership class is high on its own supply, willfully blind to the actual contours of the political landscape, and would rather crash the party into a wall than try a new approach or concede leadership to a younger generation.

I'm not sure how you write a story about how great the schools in Highland Park, Texas, are without noting that they exist entirely to allow rich white Dallasites to maintain Jim Crow-style segregation. THREAD wsj.com/articles/scottie-sch…

Don't expect it to happen anytime soon. Supply in economically growing cities has lagged well behind demand for years.
One of the biggest risks I don’t see people talking about is the possibility of a severe (20% or more) drop in house prices, matching other assets

Nationalization of state politics shows no sign of reversing. Highly decentralized institutions of American federalism aren't set up for this kind of party system.
Massachusetts Repubs are known for electing moderate governors (MA was one of the least polarized states in the McCarty-Shor data: doi.org/10.1017/S00030554110…) But Trumpists are taking over the party and might nominate Trump's '16 state co-chair for gov. bostonglobe.com/2022/05/20/m…

Just your regular democracy where the governing party can win a 68% super-majority based on 52% vote, they control almost all domestic media, and the PM's childhood friend randomly became a billionaire after the PM took power

I don't generally approve of heckling, but I would absolutely approve of heckling here. Nobody should have to pay good money to hear tired shit you get for free from third-tier conservative Twitter accounts
It was the One Joke are you fucking serious At this point comedians who use the One Joke should be banned not for transphobia but for unforgivable laziness

If anything, the "you might be a redneck" comparison is too generous, because redneck jokes are a general structure with *some* room for innovation and surprise

GA Gov candidate Kandiss Taylor says she will execute Sheriffs by firing squad if they don’t “do the will of the people. I don’t mind handcuffing them either .. The Constitution says when you commit treason, it’s death by firing squad. I didn’t write it - it’s in there.”

"San Franciscans do not feel safe and secure" is the deck on this article San Francisco has the same population as Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville, with a Republican mayor and a Republican governor, has had more than three times as many murders this year as San Francisco
"The country has lurched from concern over murderous police violence and the tragedy of mass incarceration to concern about cities under siege and higher homicide rates. [Chesa] Boudin has responded in part by refusing to respond," @AnnieLowrey writes: on.theatln.tc/z0u6HSL

This is a great story and a great example for a class. It's got all the elements of misinformation in miniature right up to the blog > cable opinion show pipeline. (And next time I'll look at the camera more, I promise)
Beyond the headline: that "prep for $10 a gallon" essentially tracks back to a station in Auburn, WA that changed pumps to price *racing* fuel. Below, his intvw for @king5seattle. Thanks @uwcip @holden for insight on checking sources & stressing context: bit.ly/3sJy6ML
