When I was starting as an indie game dev I also find it difficult to understand why my simple game becomes a hit while the one with big-budget failed.
So, I started analyzing. Here's what I found:

Played Omori and Disco Elysium recently. Once again I didn't get why these games are popular. Why players suddenly eager to read tons of text, why they're interested in story of some children. Popular belief that players don't like to read is wrong, I guess.
