Last night it was my privilege to attend the opening ceremony of the School of #Abenaki at #MiddleburyCollege. A decade ago, the number of Abenaki speakers south of the Canadian border was vanishingly small, but 35 people have enrolled this year. See middlebury.edu/language-scho…

Finally finished, the symbol for “dharma” in Sanskrit, written in the version of the Pallava script that would later develop into Cham. Carved in walnut. Who would like this as a side-table?

The usual questions: What? Where? When? Not where or when it was made, because the answers are "Last night, on my kitchen counter." No, I want the answers about the script itself.....

I've just been sent this amazing offer from one of my contacts: "If you know of any other teams or communities who are requesting Fonts and/or Keyboard for OS, please let me know or pass my contact to them. :)" Pass the word along!

Does anyone know what language/script this is, and what it says?

This may be what I carve next. (Perhaps not all of it, though.) It's a Cham inscription from My Son. Many thanks to Zafry Hadi for posting it on Omniglot. endangeredalphabets.com

Not just an alphabet--it's *their* alphabet, a visual reminder of a golden age in their history, even if almost nobody in Bamum can read and write it, thanks to the heavy imprint of decades of colonial suppression. To revive a script is to revive a people. endangeredalphabets.com/how-…

It’s an achievable goal. If everyone who has already liked this thread by @incunabula donated as little as $5, we would make it. Please do what you can—and also RT!

This project to revive the indigenous script of the Bamum Kingdom in Cameroon, which was created in the late 19th century but then suppressed by French colonial powers, is fundraising until the 28th. I know there are many calls on everyone's $, but if you can help, check it out.

Just had a really fascinating conversation with Tim Brookes from @EndangeredAlpha about threatened alphabets, wood carving, script revitalization, board games, and more. It will come out in September, but in the meantime do check out his many projects at endangeredalphabets.com/

Between 1896 & 1910 King Njoya's script evolved from a pictographic system to a partially alphabetic syllabic script, designed to represent all the sounds in the Bamum language of the Shü-mom people. This drawing shows him demonstrating the script to a group of his ministers. 2/
