Thank you all for reading our @NewSocialistUK article on a peculiar brand of Anglo-American veganology. 1/n

Even as the U.S. serves as home to some of the world's top phylogeographers, it doesn't actually put such work into public health practice.
in case anyone is wondering why we don’t do widespread genomic sequencing for new covid variants in the US

The so-called technology transfer many a dean bandies about is a fucking joke. If it doesn't line private sector pockets, by definition such an application can't possibly exist.

With decades of putting such genomic sequencing to good use addressing HIV, South Africa got punished with travel bans for identifying Omicron first, much in the way Spain, one of the few working European democracies with an open press during WWI, got tagged with "Spanish flu".

Yes, I know there are some U.S. examples. I've seen citywide phylogenies by New York and Houston neighborhood, for instance. But we could be fighting this block-by-block.

Such fine-grain data would be apt, however, only if paired with a public health response geared toward eradicating COVID.

We're talking a tetris program of scaled-up contact tracing and a campaign of community health workers numbering in the millions that the U.S., including under Biden, refuses to pursue as a matter of principle.

The reality playing out instead will serve as a classic textbook example, if textbooks still exist, of the richest nation in the history of the world also representing a failing nation state.

I write extensively about this problem in "Dead Epidemiologists" and will continue to in my next COVID book. The murderous incompetence of the Trump administration does not qualify the structural collapse imperial epidemiology represents and Fauci personifies. @Ethnography911

I don't know much about that, Abdulla. But will look into it tomorrow. Late here. Must sleep. ;)

"Phylogeographer @trvrb offered a preliminary analysis of the 91 Omicron genomes uploaded to the GISAID database. Bedford reported Omicron represents no descendant of any of the variants labeled so far, emerging out of SARS-2's phylogenetic tree mid-2020.

"The Omicron clade isn't a rubbish pile of loosey isolates collected together by long-branch attraction. It is a true-blue variant that emerged after quietly circulating for a whole year in areas of poor surveillance or by accelerated evolution in a chronic infection.

"@Tuliodna, director of South Africa's Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation, remarked on the wide array of mutations in the S1 domain of Omicron's spike protein, which may mark the kind of antigenic shift that promotes immune escape from natural immunity and vaccination."

Upon a back-of-the-envelope calculation, I also propose long haul COVID is more than an individual nightmare. We all may be in the hole here for many more years.

Sorry, Firoze, we first tried on one of those podcast programs and it wasn't working well. We ended up on Zoom.

I think the reason it sounds familiar is that it reads like Dean Acheson's memos. It's imperial scripture. And the CDC and every president up until Trump followed that postwar program.

On the difference between making choices and making decisions. And the way out of the trap (which requires we unplug out of the ideological premises of the system that brought about the existential threats).
