Short 🧵 on sewage: Following a complaint, in 2012 the EU Commission took the UK Gov to the European Court Justice over allowing water companies to dump sewage into rivers. Court ruled it was illegal and that sewage overflows should only ever be used in "exceptional situations"

Is the fact that @AnglianWater cut investment in their sewage network by almost 40% anything to do with the £1.94 billion dividend they paid to shareholders in 2017/18 I wonder?

So if you thought @DefraGovUK / @ranil's idea of increasing the maximum amount a water company can be fined from £250K to £250m was a good one think again. All the analysis you'll ever need below.
Lots of chest thumping about government slapping enormous (up to £250m) civil penalties on water companies for sewage pollution! It sounds shockingly like a good idea, but could it ever happen? And might it actually make things worse? A few wee thoughts... 1/

You may remember I went to Ireland in May. Well it wasn't all frolicking about, some of it actually involved work. That's if you call hanging out with these two work. :) @RealBobMortimer @MWGoneFishing "Low lie the fields of........." Fri 14th Oct. :) bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001d23…

Ah here we go, blame it all on @Ofwat and the @EnvAgency, we're really just a nice, soft, cuddly water company trying to make a honest crust governor. Really! Now about that £1,500,000,000 'special dividend' you paid to shareholders last year.
The economic regulator, Ofwat, sets the appropriate level of return for investors. One of our big on-going investments includes our 'Clean Sweep' project which has transformed bathing waters in the South West over the last 18 years at a cost of £2bn -Kaylee

Now we are moving into Newspeak territory. Over the last 2 years @SouthWestWater has spent 727,157 hours, on 84,537 occasions, dumping sewage into local rivers and onto local beaches. There is nothing whatsoever accidental about that, it is simply a result of profiteering There
We recognise that there are now serious calls to remove CSOs entirely from the sewerage system. They do act as vital safety valves to protect homes from sewer flooding, we're investing in reducing the use of CSOs via our WaterFit program. - Luke bit.ly/3yVTgeT

I'm going to have to start charging water companies for translating their Newspeak bulletins. This one: We dumped sh*t into the sea at Gyllyngvase beach but the tide came along and washed it all away so what are you lazy feckers complaining about?
A precautionary alert was raised at Gyllyngvase on Sunday to advise that there could be a temporary impact to bathing water quality, which was later removed. We continue to invest in our network to reduce the use of storm overflows as part of our WaterFit plan. - Luke

Of course the question @BBCOxford should be asking is how many rivers and chalk streams have been affected by @thameswater's badly maintained, underinvested, leaky supply network?
Have you been affected by the mains water pipe burst in #Oxford? @thameswater say "Our engineers have now stopped the flow of water from the large burst pipe at the Heyford Hill roundabout in Oxford." ▶️ Read more: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-ox…

The answer to that question by the way is about 450,000,000 litres of water each and every day, over abstracted out of the environment by @thameswater and damaging the ecology of local waterbodies.

Meanwhile Thames Water depletes the aquifers to feed its leaky system and our rivers dry up. Because its more profitable that way.
