The number of Guardian commentators, above & below the line, who believe that to want an interpersonal life is to be selfish, tells you everything. Bare lifers, the lot of them. They would be happy with a world of no love, art, culture, education - just so long as it's 'safe'.

Poor Australia. Zero Covid didn't work. Freedom is gone. But cases per million is still very low. If it is right that everyone is going to get Covid, before gaining immunity, Australia will be dealing with this nonsense for 20 more years.

Given that 46% of those 100,000 Covid cases a day are young healthy teens like my daughter and her mates who suffer no more than a couple of days feeling under the weather, why shouldn't the Health Secretary be absolutely ok with those numbers?
Knowing our health secretary is absolutely OK with 100,000 cases of Covid a day is truly terrifying.

1/5. To calculate how unlikely it is to see the cluster of pulmonary haemorrhage deaths in new borns - as discussed in the thread by Scott Mclachlan - it's not enough just to consider the probability of it happening at a single hospital in 1 month ....
I have just had a conversation with an upset midwife in a large 8000+ births per year hospital delivery unit. They have had a cluster of babies this month who have been born seemingly healthy, but died within 48-72 hours from pulmonary haemmorhage....

The idea the UK should take pandemic advice from Matthew Taylor, now head of quango NHS Confederation, is beyond a joke. He has a sociology degree from Southampton. I was his RSA chair for three years. He knows politics - but not healthcare/science.

I’m retweeting to say I don’t want to ever have to listen to doctors telling me what I should be doing in my life. Their job is to treat people who are actually ill. Nothing more. And they aren’t to be treated as better citizens than anyone else.
I want to see simple, low key measures like mandatory masks, home working and social distancing brought back ASAP to (a) protect society’s vulnerable members from Covid & (b) help the NHS carry on caring for all our non-Covid patients. Please RT if you do too.

There's lots of emotional & frankly weaponised language around this morning. I refer to calls for restrictions to be reintroduced 'to protect vulnerable people'. Weaponised because the inference is clear; to have another view makes you someone who wants to harm the vulnerable.

There are 7749 covid patients in hospital as of today. There are ~140,000 hospital beds in the UK (down from ~150,000 in 2010). 7749, in a population of 67 million. Maybe the problem here isn’t covid.
NHS Confederation has called for immediate implementation of Plan B measures in England - including widespread mask wearing and more working from home: “to keep people well and avoid the NHS from becoming overwhelmed this winter.”
