We have good news — after years OneDrive is finally hosting no malware listed on @abuse_ch, and for the first time in history Microsoft have fallen off the top ten malware hosters. All the Bazaloader, BazaISO and Qakbot TR payloads are gone. Keep it up MS. Customers are safer.

COP26 news: a PR idiot has emailed 160 journalists using the To field instead of BCC offering canned commentary. Worse, some quarterwit's reply-all'd to it. The list's also 5 years out of date.

“David’s law” except the issue has nothing to do with the murder of David and it wasn’t something he campaigned for in his many years as an MP.
'We now want David's law so that it will be illegal in future for people to go online under a cloak of anonymity and call people everything under the sun.' Mark Francois MP tells @Nigel_Farage he wants a change in the law to remove anonymity for social media users online.

An immersive VR world has already been tried. It was called Second Life - or, as we at El Reg named it, Sadville. Sadville flopped for totally unexplainable reasons, of course.
Facebook's official announcement is live: it's planning to hire 10,000 people in the EU over the next 5 years "to help build the metaverse" about.fb.com/news/2021/10/cr…

Lest anyone thinks Sadville was some kind of irrelevant footnote in the history of the WWW and/or gaming, Reuters (yes, the very serious and grownup financial newswire) embedded a reporter into Sadville 15 years ago theregister.com/2006/10/16/r…

People seemed to take Second Life - err, Sadville - very seriously. Google, for example, in an early precursor to Google+, tried to copy it. As always happens when Google sets up standalone social networks, it crashed and burned. theregister.com/2008/11/20/g…

(best line from that article: "Could it be that the main reason the few people who inhabit Sadville do so in order to pursue niche sexual interests?") For reasons I hope I never understand, it was possible to deploy armies of flying penises in Sadville theregister.com/2006/12/20/s…

Even big tech tried getting in on the Second Life metaverse action. Inevitably for IBM, this culminated in terrible labour relations. In 2007 Italian IBMers were urged to go on strike - in Sadville theregister.com/2007/08/24/i…

So when Mark Zuckerberg reckons his VR-dependent reboot of Sadville is going to make him even more of a multizillionaire, I'm... rather sceptical. There's relatively recent history of what happens when companies try creating metaverses.

What am I missing? FB works is because it sits alongside real life without (arguably!) being too intrusive. You never need to give it your full attention; just sporadic glances. Immersive VR though, if you have a real life, is never going to be more than a spare time pastime.

Looks like someone's closing in on the REvil ransomware gang's principals and may have already caught (or hacked) one. Earlier this month Ukrainian police started a rumour they had arrested a REvil member: theregister.com/2021/10/04/u…
REvil disappearance update: Summary: * REvil rep. 'Unknown' disappeared * REvil assumed Unknown was dead * REvil decided to continue operations * Only 'Unknown' & '0_neday' had REvil domain keys * REvil domain recently accessed using Unknown's keys Intel courtesy of @ddd1ms

HMS Diamond was unfortunately unable to participate in Monday’s event as it had experienced some technical issues.   Prior to this the destroyer had been participating in Ex Bersama Gold with other FPDA partners, taking part in various drills and serials.
