I had a lovely extra birthday present today. A clear PSA test, which means 5 years without cancer. Thank you for so much love and support, today and across the years.

To my astonishment, I’m 60 today. I didn't expect to make 30: it was nearly curtains so many times. I owe my life to remarkable luck, friends, family, the NHS and, on one occasion, a total stranger on the road.

Early in the pandemic, I called the COVID pandemic, "the ecological and climate crisis in a grain of sand". I meant it. It was a truncated microcosm, of this neoliberal system's attitude. It was all about maintaining business as usual. It was the only concern.

We’ve all wondered why scientists or MDs “turn”. How respected folk can find themselves deep in the anti-vax community. It’s a decidedly simple (but dangerous and malicious) process. Below is a thread on how people become “red pilled.” 🧵

It was exactly situations like this that the Chief Executive of @vodafone promised me he had resolved. Yet on it goes. I'd like to hear, in replies, from anyone else who has had such experiences with Vodafone. Thank you.
Look, I don't like calling out companies. But my dad passed away in early 2022 - our phones were under the same contract, so I contacted @VodafoneUK to have his line closed. I sent the death certificate etc as they requested. Never heard back, presumed they'd done it.

You could see Covid-19 as an empathy test. Who was prepared to suffer disruption and inconvenience for the sake of others, and who was not? My column on the massive, ongoing, yet denied and minimised impacts of the virus. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

On the trolls who campaign against every public health measure: If they've not yet been infected, they attribute their good fortune to “natural immunity”, rather than not getting out very much. An Old Testament ableism pervades the ideology: those who are ill deserve to be ill.

As ever, some truly dumb claims about fascism are circulating. Fascism cynically co-opts any policy that assists its spread. This DOESN'T mean that other people promoting the same policies (eg animal welfare) are fascists. To qualify as fascist, the rest of the package must apply

So what does the rest of the package look like? It's racist, supremacist, xenophobic, authoritarian. It promotes the idea of an innate human hierarchy. It fetishises armed power and seeks to achieve political ends by force. Invariably, it is fuelled by conspiracy theories.

So unless an advocate for animal welfare, or better wages, or green policies, or, for that matter, motorways or military budgets, also subscribes to the rest of the package, they are not a fascist. I wish this didn't need spelling out, again and again. But apparently it does.
