Listening to 'In Our Time' on Decadence. Lovely. We are always told we live in a decadent time but WHERE OH WHERE is the beautiful art, music, poetry, architecture, clothes? Disappointing, to say the least.

What produces the final flourish you describe is hard to define, maybe a sense of inevitable decline, but it needs to be slow enough for the beauty to mature and present itself.

Does the world just move too quickly to produce decadent art anymore? Certainly, the tech billionaires could make it happen, but will they allow it?

There have been moments. Remember the poppies around the tower of London. You need to stand right back to see the things of lasting beauty - nobody in the 1920's would have imagined their cigarette cases would be coveted now. Maybe it'll be woodburners or something from now.

There are lots of artists working quietly away, for very little money, who I am sure will express something of our time and its anxieties to future generations. We're too blind to see them at the moment, but they do exist.

This was installed close to Falkirk, it's excellent public art & quite breathtaking.
