“We've arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster.” - Carl Sagan

For some reason I’m blocked by @DonWinslow. I’ve no idea why.

An Okie ex-deejay trying to school a trauma surgeon on public health is just one of the truly embarrassing examples of Internet discourse.

God, what terrible advice. The only way out of this is when everyone has been infected. More cases > good thing. You’re simply dragging it out for god knows only how long with these stupid measures.

Imagine spending many years of your life studying an important topic, only to spend massive amounts of your time being second-guessed by a bunch of people who can't even execute a properly-worded Google search. Welcome to the Internet.

Just imagine if a fraction of the GOP’s energy fighting non-existent voter fraud had gone instead to containing a virus that’s killed 777,000 Americans and counting.

Finally settling down to do more reading and more writing, and wondering how I got by without so little of both during about the last 18 months. Something about the pandemic made it hard to concentrate, but my mind is calming down a little.

I have recently unsubscribed to several creators on YouTube, not because I object to their content, but only because they haven't done much recently, or have gone in a direction I'm not interested in to the extent I can spend the time. Got to clean house on occasion.

So now people who fell for the anti-vaccination foolishness are apparently buying into a new quack cure: treatments that somehow mystically remove the vaccine from your body after you've received the shot. These people no doubt consider themselves "free-thinkers."

Editing proofs arrived yesterday for my next book, "Flat Earth Thinking." How long from editing proof to galleys? Can't say; there is much work to be done. But it's progressing.

The core challenge of public health: if you warn people of a problem and take action that successfully prevents or halts the problem, people accuse you of over-reacting or grasping for power; if you do nothing, people die. It takes strength to choose to put others’ lives first.

“We do risk a massive backlash in case the Omicron VOC does not cause a massive wave of infection and can be controled. But this is a risk that I am comfortable to live with as the pandemic has caused so many deaths and suffering”, @Tuliodna told me.

Very sad to hear of the death of Stephen Sondheim. "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" was the first musical I ever performed, as Pseudolus. Sondheim's tunes and lyrics were very challenging, and well worth the effort to master, or as close as I came to mastery.

The fact that @GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy has any position of power should be an embarrassment to everyone in the US.

#DYK @NASAPersevere has a twin? The nearly identical rover — OPTIMISM — has a crucial job here on Earth. Recently, it kicked off a series of tests to assess the risk of potential driving hazards its sister may face while exploring the Mars surface. go.nasa.gov/3Ft5tYu

I just had to get out a magnifying glass to read the instructions for my wife's phone headset. What were the instructions? To go to the website to get the instructions.

I do wish news reports would stop referring to Glenn Youngkin's victory as "unlikely" or similar language. For decades the gubernatorial election in Virginia following the Presidential election has gone to the party opposite the new President's.

So I gave into temptation and bought a lap steel guitar. Another instrument to learn. Not sure what I'm doing to myself, but I can't seem to help it. Thankfully I am actually playing the mandolin I bought recently; at least I'm not just collecting instruments that collect dust.

Just got an ad on YouTube with the banner: "Do You Support President Trump?" There is no President Trump. There is an ex-president by that name, whom I refer to as "Former." But there is no President Trump.
