How many have died in the pandemic? The Economist built a model that estimates the true death toll of the pandemic, corrected for underreporting. economist.com/graphic-detail… They come to the conclusion that 17.6 million people have died. This map shows the death rate per country.

so many of the experts on cable news refuse to recognize a professional duty to follow the data without trying to add a rosier shade
Replying to @BillHanage
Pandemic twitter often tries to divide people into ‘pessimist’ or ‘optimist’ camps. This is not helpful. Especially when it comes to the folks who know most about infectious disease. I am neither an optimist nor a pessimist. I am a scientist and I try to call it like I see it 2/n

hmm
I don’t think the American left is going to get far until it can acknowledge that average living standards in this country are actually very high, and that’s the appropriate context in which to think about specific problems.

Look, we have neither the tools nor, frankly, the collective societal/governmental will at this point to trace and contain Omicron. It's gonna go everywhere and we just gotta hope the vaccines hold up.

They’re also in the minority according to polling, but extremely overrepresented in elite discourse.
When people say “there is nothing more Biden can do about covid,” they either have spent almost no time trying to think of anything Biden could do OR they don’t want Biden to do anything else, for whatever reason, and don’t want to admit they are fine with 1,000+ deaths per day

when rights are being completely torched it is comforting to know that pundits, rather than rallying mass protest or strategizing the kind of state gov/judicial clawbacks the GOP has engineered for decades will instead engage in bootless semi-literate handwringing

It is wildly premature to be talking about masking offramps in @NYCSchools rn. I know the UK has zero 5-9yo's vaxxed, but we don't have a ton of coverage there yet either.
The Covid rolling rate for 5-9 year olds in England has exceeded 1000 per 100K for the first time. That means 1% of this age group (36K children) tested positive in the last week (actual infection levels may be 4x higher, based on ONS survey). Why are we allowing this to happen?

Telling people vaccines don't work/are very harmful when solid evidence exists to the contrary is misinformation Telling people nonpharmaceutical interventions don't work/are very harmful/aren't supported by the public when solid evidence exists to the contrary is misinformation

What's wrong with quoting Monica Gandhi predicting the future? Here's Gandhi, over and over, in multiple outlets, just before California/the US's summer/fall Delta surge:

And here she was right before India's massive Delta wave, which killed *millions* (if you look at excess death counts)
Have been talking to my Indian colleagues. I think it is 1) herd immunity now; 2) good mask wearing which doesn't block all infection but leads to more mild illness& then immunity; 3) previous coronaviruses cross-reactive T cell immunity; 4) some vaccine effect

Why on earth do the @NYTimes and @washingtonpost continue to go to her for predictions?
