Our (co-inventors @McLellan_Lab) COVID-19 vaccine (spike delivered by @moderna_tx's mRNA) was just injected into the 1st human in phase 1 trial, only 66 days after viral sequence release... a testament to rapid vaccine development for emerging diseases🦠💚 niaid.nih.gov/news-events/ni…

There are a few results: 1. Omicron still uses ACE2 2. There is a very large drop in neutralization of Omicron by BNT162b2 immunity relative to ancestral virus 3. Omicron escape from BNT162b2 neutralization is incomplete. Previous infection + vaccination still neutralizes

Guest lecture today in @abrahamlabhms’ Virology course!!! My first ever lecture as a professor. Now take a wild guess as to whether my slides are in order? Hint: Omicron ruined my life. 😂

Fun fact: His preliminary exam was on RSV, & he might be the only congressional candidate to ever be briefed by @BarneyGrahamMD during their PhD qual exams back in 2010. My PhD classmate & friend (in real life) is running for NC Congress, y’all.
I earned my Ph.D. from UNC Chapel Hill in Microbiology and Immunology with a specialty in Virology. I have been studying viruses and creating the next generation of scientists and healthcare workers for a decade.

He’s also the “viral evolutionary biologist” I undercover tweeted about in the beginning of the pandemic. I guess he decided to be a part of building infrastructure “with brains” to outsmart viruses. So very proud of you @RLWatkinsNC!
I spoke to a viral evolutionary biologist who said, "I know viruses don't have brains, but by evolutionary chance... they can outsmart any societal infrastructure that wasn't built with brains though."

7) But there are a lot of unknowns, and many 'scariants' have come and gone. I assume we will have a much better idea about the actual risk in 2-3 weeks. We need to stay calm and do our work.

I’ll raise you one: BY THE TIME YOU DETECT ONE VARIANT ANOTHER IS ALREADY CIRCULATING UNDER THE RADAR SOMEWHERE SO WITH A MIX OF SURVEILLANCE LAGS, LOW VACCINE UPTAKE, INEQUITABLE VACCINE ACCESS WE ARE WILL BE CHASING VARIANTS ENDLESSLY. (my first all caps tweet)
BY THE TIME YOU CLOSE YOUR BORDERS, THE VARIANT IS ALREADY THERE. (my first all caps tweet)

Omicron synopsis in my email: 1. Everyone’s on top of it. 2. Right now, no one knows much re: transmission, vaccine efficacy, etc. 3. Yes, we should repurpose ongoing experiments. 4. (jokes about my tweet) 5. Darn, I missed an essay due date. 6. Insert companies’ action plan

Hillsborough, NC breeds scientists. Don’t cha forget it. 💫 👩🏿‍🔬
I just learned that @KizzyPhD and I grew up in the same town, and even went to the same high school for one year?! We didn't/don't know one another, but as someone who doesn't love where they grew up, I find this especially inspiring. Greatness out of our small town!

1/n: Another thing I started while in dissertation writing mode: When I’m writing, I read something non-related as soon as I awake in order to remind myself the world doesn’t end if I don’t publish.
When I was writing my dissertation, I stayed home during the day and did lab work at night. It was productive on both ends. I’m doing it now (12 - 8 am) to avoid exposure to SARS-CoV-2... andddddd BOOM my postbac walks in as 5 am.

2/n: I had plans to read more @timothybtyson but saw this nature.com/articles/d41586-0… at the top of my feed so instead I just spent 10 min reading about academic burnout. It’s like God, if you want me to rest… just say that; there’s no need to be passive aggressive about it. Lol

5/n: Ok so last time (2nd shot) I had a glorious 14 hour nap after 60+ hour weeks for a year. I planned to have similar fatigue w/ the booster, but I’m up at 1:07 AM reading a @timothybtyson book listening to @Adele’s “30”. 21 hours later, side effects to report: sore arm 💪🏿 💉
