If you feel like you've been hearing a lot of criticism of federal government spending this campaign season, it might be because you have. Federal dollars, however, kept many GOP candidates’ businesses afloat, financial records indicate. My latest: wyofile.com/ppp-loan-records…

Last winter, I began looking into a historic wolf hunt on the northern border of Yellowstone National Park. Nearly eight months later, here’s the end result. The wildest story I’ve ever reported. theintercept.com/2022/07/20/…

The quads are down to three. @AngusThuermer with the report on a subadult offspring of Grizzly 399 that was trapped and killed after a spate of conflicts down the Green River—news that's sure to sadden the beloved @GrandTetonNPS griz's faithful following. wyofile.com/officials-kill-s…

Elk are prized, worthy of hunters' obsessions and NGOs that advocate exclusively on their behalf. But they're also smart, overpopulated (esp. where predators are wiped out), are a scourge to cattle ranchers and are the target of new @WGFD cull-style hunts. wyofile.com/where-elk-strike…
In NW Wyo, it's been a bizarre, somewhat troubling water year. May mountain snow pushed peak runoff later than normal and enabled the Yellowstone floods. But now there's a heatwave for as long as I can see, severe drought is rearing its ugly head and streamflows are cratering.

I spent 2 weeks last year exploring the northernmost tip of AK w @owlresearchinst. Only 1 nest hatched. This year, it's looking like more of the same. The owl acts as an alarm bell for other less charismatic tundra critters. hakaimagazine.com/features/a…

In Wyoming, you just have to be 30 and qualified to vote to be eligible for five statewide elected positions. The one challenger to Wyo State Treasurer Curt Meier, who's a rancher, is taking shots: "You have somebody who has no idea what they’re doing." wyofile.com/treasurer-meier-…

We so often get hung up on the human dimensions of natural disasters. I used words like "ruinous" and "devastating" to describe the Yellowstone floods, but man do I love this @NatGeo piece on the myriad ways they just did a lot of ecological good. nationalgeographic.com/envir…

Yes, Jackson Hole has an extraordinary, uniquely horrible housing crisis. But turns out there's nowhere to live anywhere in Wyo. “We’re hearing it from everybody… large towns, small towns, rural towns, college towns …” — Wyo Association of Municipalities ED J. David Fraser

The bad news keeps piling on (or pile driving into): @YellowstoneNPS just reported its 3rd bison goring of the year (and 2nd in 3 days). 2022 might give 2015 a run for its money as the record year for gorings. Yeesh. Old story below. jhnewsandguide.com/news/envi…

From last week's camping trip on Jackson Lake. Now that I have your attention 👀... ahead of tomorrow's US House debate, I'm looking for any Wyoming voters that are *undecided* and are planning to watch the debate in order to size up the candidates. DMs are open, thanks! #WyPol

It's the greenest, lushest late June that I can recall, yet the indexes are in normal territory (left) and wildfires are sparking (Sandy Fire, right). That's life in the fire-adapted and increasingly fire-prone Northern Rockies. July 4 is coming in hot, and I smell a fire ban.

And now @YellowstoneNPS is reporting its 2nd bison goring of the year. The victim: 34-year-old Colorado Springs dude walking with his family on the Old Faithful boardwalk yesterday. Arm injury and an ambulance ride to EIRMC in Idaho Falls. Yowzers, hope that’s it for the day.

Wyoming logged its first grizzly mauling of 2022, @WGFD reports. Out-of-state experienced hiker traveling in the Absaroka alpine who surprised a griz at close range. The man could not get to his bear spray before contact. Helicoptered to a Billings hospital. Stay safe, y'all.

One thing I noticed during the 2022 legislature was how many women report on politics and government in Wyoming. It's disappointing not one of us will be able to ask questions during the @WyomingPBS US House debate this week. The host and the panelists are all men.
