I talked to literally thousands of Ukrainian students between 2011-2014, many of them from Donetsk and Luhansk and none of them ever mentioned anything about wanting to join Russia.

Taking those two factors into account, if there had been ANY serious "separatist" movement in the Donbas pre-2014, I'd have been aware of this discussion.
