49ers building strategy: 1. Acquire/develop A-list players 2. Pay those A-list players (list can grow as salary cap does) 3. Don’t pay B-listers when FA comes; obtain comp picks thru departures instead 4. Develop staff (restocks coaches + more comp picks) 5. Pick next A-listers

A good time to re-share 49ers' QB efficiency data with a lot of nonsense flying around. The reason Brock Purdy earned his clubhouse lead is simple: He's been remarkably efficient, especially for a rookie. Also worth noting that Darnold hit 7.1 ANY/A with Carolina last year

Sam Darnold DVOA through the years — something notable happened in 2022... 2018: -15.2% (#30) 2019: -20.4% (#31) 2020: -32.2% (#32) 2021: -31.6% (#33) 2022: +23.2% (#5)* *6 games to close the season

Now, combine Sam Darnold's 2022 surge with what Kyle Shanahan said about him — "I don’t think he’s always been in the best situations." Combine that with Lynch's comments — "he broke through" — and it's clear the 49ers believe they might be working with a very productive QB here
Sam Darnold's completion percentage over expectation (CPOE) saw a remarkable spike this past season... 2018: -4.6% 2019: +1.0% 2020: -1.9% 2021: -4.9% 2022: +4.8% The 2022 mark came over only 6 games. It would've ranked #2 amongst QBs who played a full season

49ers signed OT Matt Pryor for the minimum and a veteran salary benefit to save some money... $1.08m base salary $50k workout bonus $990k 2023 salary-cap hit $90k saved via the benefit Nothing guaranteed. McKivitz still in RT driver's seat and Pryor is a swing tackle candidate

Yup, good catch. The $1.05 million the 49ers have saved through veteran salary benefits is enough to pay their entire 11-man draft class. Remarkable, really
Replying to @LombardiHimself
Or, that's enough for the entire draft class, right?

I wouldn't lock anyone who's signed for the minimum this offseason into the 49ers' 53... however, they all have a solid shot and the main goal in building the back end of the 90-man is to set up offseason competition and flexibility
Replying to @LombardiHimself
Yes, with the caveat that we don't know if all of those guys will make the 53, or should we conclude that they will based on signing bonus/guaranteed money?

So far this year, 49ers have leveraged 4 veteran salary benefit exceptions. Here are savings they've gleaned through them: Ross Dwelley: $620k (4-year qualifying player) T.Y. McGill: $225k Austin Bryant: $115k Matt Pryor: $90k That's $1.05m total saved — enough for an extra vet

It’s a product of binary thinking that ends up completely misrepresenting how the 49ers feel about any given issue because actual football decisions are almost all textured in at least some way
The outside speculation that the 49ers "hate" Trey Lance is so ridiculous. Yes, Brock Purdy's performance makes him favored going into things, but Lance will have a chance to compete. "We believe Trey can be that. I think he would've done it last year if he had stayed healthy."

There it is. Stop speculating everybody. There it is. Very clearly. The questions have been answered. Let it play out.

Last week I explored vet salary benefits/other techniques 49ers are using to max salary-cap sustainability in depth. Talked about this a lot at owners meetings. More key than ever now to focus on it. ⁦Credit @49erscap⁩ who’s been zoomed in on this theathletic.com/4332475/2023…

It's possible because only the top 51 cap hits count in the offseason. Because the 49ers don't pick until No. 99, they're not slated for a draftee cap hit of over $1 million, so they'll be able to sign their class for a remarkably cheap price tag
Replying to @LombardiHimself
What? How is that possible? $1m must be a mistake, I thought I read somewhere $5m. They have like 8 picks don't they?

The 49ers currently have about $4 million of 2023 salary-cap space. As I wrote last week, their upcoming draft class is only slated to cost $1.05 million against the cap

The cheapest contract counting against the 49ers' salary cap this offseason (No. 51) is that of OL Nick Zakelj, who has a $918k cap hit. Any subsequent contracts coming in under that amount will not count against the offseason cap

49ers' top five salary-cap numbers for 2023... 1. Trent Williams: $27.2m* 2. Arik Armstead: $23.8m* 3. George Kittle: $18m* 4. Nick Bosa: $17.9m 5. Christian McCaffrey: $12m *contract has been restructured, so unusually high cap hit is by design

Option power is a good thing. And it’s as simple as the 49ers striving for that. There is no good argument against it
The best thing that could happen for SF is for Lance to have a strong OTAs and dominate training camp. Then they have 2 QBs they feel good about & insurance if Purdy’s injury lingers or he somehow regresses. If Brock continues to thrive, Lance becomes a nice trade piece in 2024.
