#TargetingZero🦠 ethics needs to be managed carefully. It should be achieved through good planning, airborne disease control, vaccines, NPI’s and safe, plentiful, humane border quarantine. Not by abandoning duties to care for citizens at home or overseas.

I take it this is news to no-one except me, but I hadn't quite registered that COVID-19 went down in ONS age-standardised mortality statistics as the leading cause of death for 2020 and 2021. And as #3 for 2022 so far.

Monkeypox is not transmitting as fast as smallpox because it’s not adapted well yet. In virus terms it’s just getting to know us. Smallpox took many, many years to become what it was. But that doesn’t mean it is using a completely different tactics to transmit. #Aerosol

MPx is known to transmit in many ways… including aerosol in animal studies. If I’m wrong, you wear a respirator for a couple of years and save yourself some COVID infections. If I’m right, and we don’t act on this, it’s going to get grim.

PS. MPx has been classified as an airborne HCID since it was discovered. I’m not talking whacky science. I’m talking ordinary boring science.

The weirdest thing is “#MonkeyPoxIsAirborneToo” was the accepted dogma all this time… and we are downgrading it to #DropletDogma just as we see evidence of *MORE* transmission based on evidence PRIOR to the same.

The evidence until now is that it wasn’t spreading very efficiently. Well for whatever reason, it’s now everywhere… efficient enough? #monkeypox

Oh no, my apologies, this is not weird at all. SARS was airborne until SARS2. From the outside, it looks like diseases are airborne until the guv’nor freaks out. Then the guidelines get updated faster than the tabloid news cycle. #DropletDogmaKills

You have to ask yourself, #monkeypox has been an active outbreak for decades in Africa. The @WHO guidelines should have been constantly updated over that time. Why downgrade to droplet now?

Inhaling pox contaminated aerosol is bad for your health. It’s not the only way you can get pox viruses, but it is a way, and it’s not good for you. According to animal studies, it might even be a more dangerous way to get inoculated. Wear a respirator.

And meanwhile, the state of NSW is running an ad campaign to reduce road deaths, and saying nothing about COVID beyond "We're open again, hit the pubs!", even though deaths from COVID are far more common than deaths from road accidents. :-( :-(

Now the election is over can the media & Government drop the quite frankly bizarre denial the pandemic is over & Covid doesn’t exist. Kids experiencing large learning disruptions, businesses can’t get workers, Covid is approaching our leading cause of death. Do something FFS.

I expect immediate action from @DanielAndrewsMP now. There are no excuses. Our health system is in crisis mode. Almost every Covid mitigation has been removed. Hospitals are sending out tweets saying they cannot handle load. No more press releases. Action now.

In Africa the most common misdiagnosis of monkeypox is chickenpox with some 50% of cases misdiagnosed: also co-infection between the monkeypox and chickenpox virus is believed to be common:

Irrespective of the balance of close contact versus fomite vs aerosol, we know it can be spread by aerosol transmission in studies in monkeys, and UKHSA classify it as an airborne HCID, so "it's not COVID, control will be different" shouldn't be taken to mean "it's not airborne"
