I am thankful to spend as much time as possible with people who find meaning and contentment in bedrocks like faith, family, and community, and who don’t live their lives in anticipation of, or basking in the afterglow from, their daily Two Minutes of Hate.

An all-time favorite chart: In the early 1800s, nails were almost ***half a percent*** of the US economy

I’m becoming a really big fan of these Community Notes!
Why yes, I did find this helpful!

I don’t necessarily agree, but I understand this argument. I will not understand if there isn’t a MacGuyery project to snag this thing. We did it in the Cold War with C-130s with the Fulton Skyhook and Corona satellite film canister capture programs! (1/2)
Senior US official tells me biggest consideration for not shooting down the Chinese spy balloon over continental US is the potential for civilian (American) casualties on the ground. Heavy equipment hanging from underneath the balloon could create a large debris field. MORE

The Chinese spy balloon is higher than a C-130’s ceiling, but I’m sure a grizzled C-17 loadmaster would love the chance to drop a weighted seine net or whatever on this lighter-than-air interloper so a Chinook can snatch it at a lower altitude. There is always a way! (2/2)

The US is in trouble because debt is rising faster than GDP, and headed to dangerous levels. CBO's rosiest scenario shows the debt soaring to 185% of GDP. At a 5% interest rate that means annual interest costs of 9.25% of GDP - which would consume half of all tax revenues. (3/)

Pedantic semantic point I need to get off my chest: something “classified” isn’t necessarily SECRET or TOP SECRET. Even U/FOUO is technically classified, just classified as UNCLASSIFIED/FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY. UNCLASSIFIED *is* a classification and I will die on this hill.

Shorter Wagner pitch:
#Wagner ad recruiting Americans into Wagner “the only country fighting again evil is #Russia” “#America now is not what founding fathers dreamed about”… WTF?

Credit to @RepMattGaetz for articulating an intellectually honest approach here re committee assignments for Schiff/Swalwell v Omar. Parallels discussion by @EliLake and @shadihamid on Jan 13 episode of @thehonestlypod by @bariweiss.
As of tonight, I am undecided as to whether or not I would vote to remove Rep. @Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Accumulations around 6 inches are possible from this afternoon through Sunday morning just north of I-96. Lesser amounts are expected either side of there. Some freezing rain is also possible along I-94.

After having roughly 17 minutes of sunshine - total - in the last 11 days, it's nice to get a smidgen of sunshine to start our Friday. It won't last - snow moves in around midday/early PM.

1/25/2023: 9:45 AM: Snow showers continue to overspread the region. This is causing slick icy roads, especially on overpasses along with decreased visibility. Please drive with caution.

Love it @FlyGRFord!
Instead of cable news, the Grand Rapids, Michigan airport just plays Gerald Ford trivia. More public places should do this, honestly.

Just-below freezing temps & light snow overnight=slippery conditions, which should improve as day progresses. Crews scraping where needed & applying material on state roads, county primaries; will focus material at hills, stops and curves on local roads. Reduce speeds.

Want to immediately feel 50 yrs older? Do something dumb, like standing on a stool to re-hang a heavy 96” fluorescent lamp bc you’re too lazy to drag a ladder over 20 ft, then fall on the concrete floor and bruise a rib. I now have the groans and sighs of a much much older man.

Weirdly refreshing to engage with folks not from the mad left or the mad right, or even from the mad place on the horseshoe where left/right meet, but rather from some bizarre Z-axis of political thought. Novelty is a rare occurrence these days! (2/2)
