I'm back from a week at my mom's house and now I'm getting ads for her toothpaste brand, the brand I've been putting in my mouth for a week. We never talked about this brand or googled it or anything like that. As a privacy tech worker, let me explain why this is happening. 🧵

Banks charged $12.4 billion in overdraft fees in 2020, and the average overdraft fee is about $25, Forbes says. During the pandemic. I was surprised this article didn't mention existing regulations and ways to protect yourself. Thread with 💸 tips vox.com/22733050/overdraft-f…

"Overdraft protection" is an Orwellian term that means the opposite of what it says. The best way I've avoided overdrafts is to DECLINE protection. p.s. i am not a financial planner and this is not financial advice

A 2010 rule from the Federal Reserve Board said banks must require you to opt INTO overdraft fees. So here's the spin: "We'll 'protect' you from your card declining. Instead, we'll charge you a fee—$10 to $35—to let the transaction go through and avoid embarrassment."

This is confusing on purpose. Research shows 2 out of 3 customers who discussed overdraft protection with their bank still didn't understand. And "68 percent of those who overdraw...would prefer to have transactions declined rather than pay a $35 fee" pewtrusts.org/en/research-an…

Banks can reorder your transactions non-chronologically, letting them increase the number of overdraft fees they can charge. After several lawsuits over the practice, some banks have backed off of doing this, but it's still legal

Even though I've opted out of overdraft protection, I've still been hit with fees twice. My credit union makes an exception for monthly automatic payments (like internet bills). Both times, I called and they reversed the fees.

Props to @CoryBooker, @SenWarren, and @RepMaloney for introducing bills to ban overdraft fees AND predatory reordering. It's sensible regulation that's particularly helpful for financially vulnerable Americans. warren.senate.gov/newsroom/p…

In conclusion, 1) call your bank. Opt out of overdraft protection. 2) call your bank every time they hit you with an overdraft fee. Dispute it. ESPECIALLY if you opted out. 3) call your congresspeople and tell them to support legislation to reform these practices 🪡

Just look at the vintage hand-drawn curvy traces on this power supply. Groovy, man. Don't see this kind of thing on modern circuit boards laid out on computers.
