First of all, your social media apps are not listening to you. This is a conspiracy theory. It's been debunked over and over again. But frankly they don't need to because everything else you give them unthinkingly is way cheaper and way more powerful.

Your apps collect a ton of data from your phone. Your unique device ID. Your location. Your demographics. Weknowdis. Data aggregators pay to pull in data from EVERYWHERE. When I use my discount card at the grocery store? Every purchase? That's a dataset for sale.

I have to agree with the many replies here, I don’t receive any ads that make sense. I most often get ads about things I’ve already bought, which is annoying because I’ve already over-researched whatever I’ve bought. Or the ads are just irrelevant to me, always.

This is a fascinating thread, but it amazes me that people have a big problem with this. Companies/advertisers have data on what I buy and where I've been. They also know who I've been with. So they can target ads to me about my mom's toothpaste........So what? Why should I care?

Because right *now* it's toothpaste. Eventually it is countless, myriad things about you that aren't just going to selling you shit. It's them selling you to other people - even governments. Google "Cambridge Analytica". That's why it's a problem.
