Giving unconditional cash to the poorest people in the world allows them not outsiders to decide what they need. It can deliver better nutrition than a nutrition program, better employment than an employment program. But the aid world still resists cash.. vox.com/future-perfect/2022/…

Gerald is absolutely right - the UK should offer to take 30,000 refugees from the EU annually. In return France should take back all those who currently cross the channel. A proper refugee coalition would allow countries to burden share + help those most in need @RestIsPolitics

Till then: 🇫🇷🇬🇧🇪🇺 should show how democracies CAN stop irregular migration without violating human rights (& with no need for Rwanda). - 🇫🇷 to offer quickly to take back all who cross channel after day x - 🇬🇧 to offer to resettle 30,000 refugees from EU per year @RoryStewartUK

Fair to say that 'it can actually be quite rubbish being an MP' gets absolutely the biggest split in reaction between people who work in Westminster and people who comment on Twitter

That’s incorrect, badly so, check the data. NHS needs 3% a year to keep up with older population, new tech etc, but only got 1% after 2010 - better than most depts, but not enough. NHS held up well under pressure - even in Covid catastrophe. Getting harder now: exhausted staff

Conservatives threw money at the NHS and it didn't improve anything, just created demand for more.

No sympathy expected for MPs - but if - as everyone insists - it is such a cushy over-paid and idle profession why are so many MPs, who had careers ahead of them, leaving politics?
Why are we losing so many MPs? Because being an MP is an increasingly rubbish job thetimes.co.uk/article/i-saw…

Amazing thread - illustrating why Politics has become such a toxic profession - and why so few people - presumably including those attacking Sajid Javid below - actually want to become a politician themselves.
Sorry to see this - and I’m afraid more illustration of how difficult politics has become as a life

Great listening to Helen Clark, she has a wealth of knowledge and experience. Once opposed to electoral reform Helen is now firmly in favour. Produced a better, fairer New Zealand democracy. The UK needs to catch up #PR now!

One of the greatest pieces of art ever made. Just look at those details. Imagine being someone standing at St John´s Church in Ghent on 6 May 1432 when it is revealed.
As always, a huge dank je to @bartvanloo for joining us, and a hearty recommendation for his wonderful book THE BURGUNDIANS. And here's a glimpse of van Eyck's masterpiece that we discuss in the second half - the Ghent Altarpiece. The greatest artwork ever made?

An excellent piece by @FrankLedwidge66: if the West supplied better tanks, missiles and air defence, Ukraine could win the war.
