For those who haven't read the article, it is not advocating this approach & highlights multiple problems which it would cause. But it has been considered by some senior unionist figures & from what I can establish is legally possible, given the messy legislation - & that's news.

UUP leader Doug Beattie has said categorically that he will not be part of any post-election attempt to unite the unionist parties for one day to prevent a SF first minister - something possible under the law, but now highly unlikely in practice.
We won’t be doing it Sam….. we confirmed the ruling 3 weeks ago & were told it was extant. Either way mate, I stand by what I say & I will not be involved in this if the mental gymnastics say it can be done.

I can't see SF agreeing to going into the Assembly/Executive if this happened .... so it really won't be a problem. There simple won't be an Assembly

We saw what happened to SF the last time they walked put of the Assembly. It backfired. Honestly, if SF are largest party + unionists & nationalists are still minorities (not by any means certain) more emphasis should be put on legislature not the executive to deal with impasse.

The DUP may not even get top Unionist spot. Yes some Unionists might try a stunt like that. I imagine Sinn Fein would collapse the Executive rather than accept this.
