Paul Hamill, 46, was a disciple of covid sceptic Ivor Cummins. The father-of-two promoted him with religious zeal. Last month he got covid & was hospitalised; now he's dead. A tragic story of mistrust, misinformation, & money - lots of it for Cummins... belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opini…

I've written about Northern Irish politics for 15 years & inevitably that brings some abuse. But I've never got anything like what's come in the hours since writing about Ivor Cummins. This is just a fraction of it. That makes me more interested in what's going on here, not less.

Two weeks after writing about Ivor Cummins, the unusual level of abuse goes on. This is from an email which also says "there is no pandemic". The anger & feeling of persecution here suggests people who have lost all faith in society & its institutions, & that should be troubling.

Really worrying that there are so many people who have grasped these theories, because it somehow allows them to vent at their lack of control, and those they perceive to be in control. Sorry to see you having to put up with abuse, Sam, at a guess, how much of it is Bot Farms?

Is there any way back for people like that?

Interesting question. I think we have done alot as a society to turn those who change their minds into lesser people. It seems to be about 'winning' rather than debate. It makes changing your mind a publicly humiliating thing, which is not what we need in any area.

Maybe, but 90% of 12+ are vaccinated. There will be people who have lost faith in institutions/society. There's a lot of changes.

90% of over 12s in this country are not vaccinated. 89% of over 18s, some over 16s, we haven’t even rolled out the 12-15 vax yet in NI?!

Sam. I have read all you have posted today and just felt moved to reply. No one, for any reason, should be subjected to this. I confess I am rapidly losing faith in humanity. What have we come to?

There is little doubt that many people have lost faith in society & institutions. Part of that is because those driving public policies have propagated the theory that everyone can have 'their truth' across a whole range of issues when in reality real truth & real facts do matter
