Many NI people struggle to make ends meet. But many others are doing very well financially - even though few of them probably realise it: Paid at or close to UK rates but with lower tax, more public spending, cheaper cost of living, vastly cheaper houses...belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opini…

What specifically does the lower tax refer to?

Lower rates & no domestic water charges. A few years ago the DUP incongruously boasted in election ads that NI had the lowest household taxes in the UK - while at the same time demanding that the Treasury give Stormont more cash to spend on public services.

Interesting. Is the rates percentage lower than England or is it because property values are lower here?

I don't think that's a factor because the principle of rates is to raise a set sum - property values are used to apportion that sum fairly across households. So if a house goes up in value, that person pays more & another pays less but it doesn't raise more overall.

so is the percentage of rates paid on a £200k house in NI less than someone living in a £200k house in England?

Here's the section on this from the Fiscal Commission. I think that because they're using the average, and because of how rates are levied, that means that in like for like terms each NI house is cheaper (massively so for mansions which are subsidised by poorer homeowners!).

The problem with using an average figure here is that NI will have a much larger proportion of cheaper homes than England. So this brings down the average rates bill comparatively without telling us if like for like rates are actually less than England. Isn’t that right??

Sorry for the belated reply. I don't think that's right, but stand to be corrected. The cost of the house has nothing to do with how much rates overall are raised. If houses were all worth £5 or £10, Stormont's rates income would be the same - the £5/£10 decides the share we pay.
