In English, people now often use "actor" rather than "actress" for women. In Russian and Polish, there is a push by the same social movements to use words like "authoress." It seems what matters is the signal of power of changing language, not precisely how it changes.

I knew scientists were territorial but this is next level. Remember Katalin Karikó, the unsung hero of mRNA vaccines? Her advisor Robert Suhadolnik tried to have her deported when she accepted a competing offer in another lab.

On Sagan’s birthday, the story of how he sued Apple: the PowerMac was codenamed "Carl Sagan" as it would earn "billions & billions." When Sagan told them stop, they renamed it BHA ("Butt Headed Astronomer"). Sagan sued, Apple apologized. They renamed it LaW ("Lawyers are Wimps")

One of the biggest myths of modern world is the idea that true knowledge can be released as "nuggets" through podcasts. That's illusion, and mostly just acting as knowledge groupies.

Been thinking a lot lately how the poignant divide isn’t between left and right or even locals and cosmopolitans, but between people who live in constant, feverish, religious anticipation of some new and better (ideal) world and those who feel like this imperfect one works.

In German, we have a word called "Gratismut" (literally: free courage). It describes actions that involve few risks or negative consequences.
