Fiona Apple (& dog Mercy) have a new story to share w/ you. She & other court watchers were retaliated against for reporting on injustice. Denied access. She just submitted testimony in MD legislature to defend virtual court watch. A video series on court access. The intro:

A white person is telling me (a white person) that the brutal & systematic murder of a Black person—that would have been sanctioned by Memphis Pd if there weren’t video or perhaps if the cops weren’t Black—is “not the time” to use my privilege & platform to speak out. I disagree.

To make this clear: Obviously when white people speak out, we need to do so with care, be mindful of when to sit down, *listen* to our comrades, do everything we can to help platform voices that are not as easy-to-be-heard as ours, & did I mention, LISTEN?!

Which leaders *aren’t* calling for more “police reform” following the police murder of Tyre Nichols in Memphis? Those leaders are the only serious & reasonable ones.

To be clear, the Memphis PD is just as responsible for the murder of Tyre Nichols as those 5 officers. 5 cops didn’t randomly decide to murder him. They committed a murder they assumed would be sanctioned by the department. The surveillance video screwed them. Not their actions.

Either we abolish or we don’t. No politician statement, no non-profit statement, nor calls for reform or accountability will matter today, yesterday, or tomorrow. We either abolish or we don’t. There is nothing else to talk about.

You know what the racists really think of Black people because they're not calling the 5 Black police officers beating Tyre Nichols to death police brutality but instead black on black crime. They'd be defending white cops but quick to concede criminality for the black cops.

A factual statement from my years as a public defender in Brooklyn: When specific cops were discussed or mentioned by the people I represented, the cops most feared were near-always Black.

all of the reforms failed at the same damn time - black cops, body cameras, multiple cops on the scene, tasers instead of guns- so how is more reform the answer? #Blacker cops? Even non-deadlier non deadly weapons? ten cops instead of five? HD body cameras? harder convictions?

A billboard in the heart of Times Square. Directly across from the NYPD station. This message: “Hey NYPD. It’s us. NYC residents. The ones who pay your salary.” A single day of pay could fund NYC’s public libraries to avoid Eric Adams’ budget cuts. Watch:

Just look at this bullshit. “Violent confrontation.” Absolutely incredible how instinctual it is for our motherfucking press to defend cops. The press has no shame. Even fucking Reuters. This isn’t fucking reporting; its Soviet Russia style propaganda.

People noticing how quickly these black cops were charged (as opposed to their murderous white fellows in other situations) should also pay attention to how *silent* the police union has been on there behalf.

Hochul claims to agree with the values behind bail reform. “But her proposal violates the moral underpinning of the criminal legal system & ignores the presumption of innocence.” 10,000s more will be caged pretrial for no good reason. justicenotfear.org/debunk/ba…

Three cheers for Fiona Apple, who among many accomplishments played the magnificent piano on Bob Dylan's Murder Most Foul.
Fiona Apple has become an avid Court Watcher. Her work helped people jailed pretrial file a civil rights lawsuit. Then: Retaliation. Shut off her court access. Today her testimony will be read in Maryland's legislature. "My name is Fiona Apple. I've been courtwatching." Thread:
