It's a shame that PREY shows us the Predators' first visit to Earth, because you know what would rock? A Predator prequel where a young, inexperienced, crash-landed Yautja is the *main character*, and he's being hunted by humans.

I think people defending that forspoken dialogue miss the point. It’s not that it’s “bad,” it’s that it has no distinct voice. Even if final fantasy dialogue is “bad,” it has character. There’s authorship to it. It’s the lazy writing that’s so cringe.

Predator movie ranking: PREDATOR (Duh.) — massive chasm — PREDATOR 2 THE PREDATOR (Yes, I mean it. It's too fun a ride.) PREY ALIEN VS. PREDATOR PREDATORS ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM You're welcome.

PREY's... fine! Much better than expected; just a bit characterless. It's shot surprisingly well, but the CGI is horrendous. Naru's pretty well written (and *not* a Mary Sue) but she's also a bit bland. The plot's tight and focused, but also too predictable and by the numbers.

My main issue with it, is that it doesn't really try to do anything interesting with the Predator itself, apart from giving him some new (well, old) toys to play with. He was only ever scary in the first film. Stop trying to make him scary again.

Which is one of the reasons why I loved the much maligned THE PREDATOR, by the way: it had *fun* with the character. It did something with this franchise that I didn't expect could work, but did (IMHO). PREY goes back to the series' roots, but for better *and* worse.

I enjoyed all of the Comanche stuff: the performances were solid enough, and the relatively slower tempo and lush cinematography allowed all of it to breathe. The film's pacing's probably my favourite thing about it. If the characters were written better, it could've been mega.

And, man, if this movie had the budget for proper practical effects (both for the monster *and* the animals)... Oof. It's ridiculous that the original Predator suit + performance are still the best and most visceral. 2022's incarnation could've rivalled it, but alas.
