Sanders got 5,901 votes, more than Leahy’s winning margin. Leahy got 49.47%, Mallary 46.38%, and Sanders 4.13%. Leahy was the first **and remains the only** Democrat elected to the US Senate from Vermont, although Sanders and Jim Jeffords caucused with Dems as independents.
