No apologies for keep raising this, but we cannot let soil sampling to 15cm be used as the basis for selling carbon credits. SFI has SOM sampling to this depth. Fine to measure as a proxy for some things, but not change in total SOC stocks. bsssjournals.onlinelibrary.w…

What would happen to Brit Ag if we withdrew all environmental funding 100%? What would ag look like if we had no grants for capital works at all, no Mid Tier, HLS etc so that we were completely dependant on the “market”? How would it affect your farm?

1. Imagine a situation where the state has misunderstood its own nationality laws for 20 years. That state has either wrongly issued passports to tens of thousands of people and will now have to take them back. Or has wrongly denied citizenship to tens of thousands of others.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 farms face a seismic, once-in-3-generation, existential upheaval What the countryside is for, how we provide for the nation & if it's a viable livelihood- all in doubt For 50yrs farming lay beyond the political discourse, no longer Surely ok to ask hacks to raise their game?
There are so many basic errors in this piece, it makes me so frustrated that the public see what’s happening in the countryside through such a distorted lens. How can we have an informed discussion when we get the basics wrong - after 6 years! bbc.co.uk/news/science-envir…

More broadly I don't think that anyone has grasped the scale and breadth of changes that will become necessary across the sector. Not just farmers (them too) but also the politicians, those who inform, the general public and farmers' representatives.

This is not going to be business as usual. A new mindset will become necessary, expectations must be reset. Not just Brexit, but climate change, demographics & instability will all drive that. & at a time of peak disconnect from productive land - which underpins civilisation.

ELMS is not an agricultural policy. It is an environmental policy. Having it does not obviate the need for agriculture, an agricultural policy, and an informed public debate about agriculture.

A 'charity' which has less than 5 years accounts to show and turns over £200k a year through the startup enthusiasm of early-years donors (which will subside), manages to secure a loan for 25x their turnover to buy land 🤔 Now seeking 'donors' (investors) #landgrab
A rewilding charity with an annual income of around £200,000 has borrowed more than £5m to buy land on which it plans to build a nature reserve and is now fundraising to repay to loan.

This thread deserves real attention. This is a farmer with not just a financial dilemma but a deeply felt ethical one. We need a considered view and approach by science that shares the same ethical standpoint. It raises extremely valid questions as to how we adapt.

That's certainly a consistent logic. But on the other hand we still need to feed 7.5billion people, every day. If relatively responsible farmers go bust, it leaves relatively irresponsible farmers to feed the world.

By 2035, demand is expected to double for germanium; quadruple for tantalum; and quintuple for palladium. The scandium market could increase nine-fold, and the cobalt market by a factor of 24. (Marscheider-Wiedemann 2016 ‘raw materials for emerging technologies’.
