The feeling when you realise you will never make a bigger contribution to civic life in Australia than your research showing LNP voters are the biggest group of Chardonnay drinkers and lattes are drunk pretty much equally in inner cities and outside them. smh.com.au/politics/federal/…

OKAY everyone, look here. It is time for a mega-thread of just the nastiest, shittiest, most planetarily destructive things that the Australian government has done over the past 3 yrs. There will be swears. Tears. Charts. Articles. And I'll add to it as we get closer to May 21

Yes but it gets one thing right. CCS does not have a social license.
This is just so wildly removed from the physical, technical realities of CCS that it just does my head in. This is genuinely a global embarrassment, @CSIRO. afr.com/policy/energy-and-cl…

Old oil rigs are currently shipped to India where they're dismantled by a workforce, including women and children, who inhale toxic materials, live to 25 and die young. Argues for a domestic Australian recycling facility to be set up at a place like Whyalla. /21

Technical breakout sessions on now. One room is a series of presentations on decommissioning of assets like old oil rigs. Speaking first up is lawyer Tina Soliman-Hunter with a blunt presentation asking: "What the hell do we do with all the decommissioned rigs?" /20

Day 3 begins - though technically it's the fourth day, but the first was a "soft open". It's the final run to the finish, with the morning starting with an address by Labor's Madeleine King. /1
Back for day two of the APPEA conference and we've kicked off with an address from Federal Resources and Water Minister Keith Pitt, followed by presentations from industry figures on tech and the future of oil and gas. /1

Intense conversation at ⁦@APPEACONFERENCE⁩ about why young people don’t want to work for oil and gas industry because of a “perception” that they are destroying the climate Saying they need to get to them at primary school stage!

🧵 An incomplete list of current & former journos who seemed embarrassed by today's press pack antics. No doubt heaps I've missed, no doubt many more unable to speak up. I know it's the end of the campaign, but is the press pack listening yet? Is self-reflection possible here?

Woodside Petroleum Chair Richard Goyder just joked that "there is no global warming in here", referring to the air conditioned auditorium. Woodside is planning to double oil & gas production. Climate criminals #WoodsideAGM

My colleagues and I met with one of the big four banks earlier this week. We asked if home loan applicants were provided with a climate risk assessment before purchasing. They said no, even though they admitted having this information. 🤯
