As true as this may be, my answer is still “pretty damn close to it.”
As always, seeing lots of “so you want to ban all guns then?” in response to any expression of frustration over the repetitive nature of yesterday’s massacre of kids, and it’s one of the ways that the gun lobby stymies any real progress.

Because there is a minoritarian, reactionary party which is explicitly uninterested in serving anyone, and does not view voters as those they represent, but merely the means by which they obtain and maintain power.
I keep coming back to this. It's been a long time since US national governing institutions have shown that they can recognize a major social challenge, design a structural reform, pass that policy, & implement it. Representative government failing to serve those it represents.
