Reflection on growing up poor during the 1950s. In light of the current crisis I now have so much more admiration for my parents managing to keep me warm and fed in difficult circumstances. And gratitude for the welfare state and major slum clearance and council homes. #politics

Taking a break from Twitter for a while. My timeline seems so cluttered up with stuff I can't find the useful or interesting tweets. Has Twitter changed what it shows or is everyone just tweeting at once?

Quite the statement. “The feedback we get from investors is that they consider the UK uninvestable as long as there is such government chaos”. Cannot emphasise enough how this government has such a limited understanding of business. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

I am anti-growth, Truss has a point. Food banks Poverty Hedge fund profits Bankers bonuses Inflation Interest rates Energy bills A&E waiting times Death-by-austerity Huge corporation profits They’re all growing and I’m against all of them growing.

Covid is bad news for everyone, including people who think they are not “vulnerable”. It’s at best inconvenient and the silent organ damage is well documented.

"We have ethics" seems like a good slogan to me. Pretty impressive of Liz Truss to launch the actual movement that will bring about her own downfall! 🤣
@trussliz will regret creating the #antigrowthcoalition she’s spun it as a negative but in reality we are just against the growing cost of living! #ConservativesOut #CPC2022

Thank you for promoting our organisation that believes in stopping the growth of rents, mortgages, energy bills, food bills and the overall cost of living #antigrowthcoalition

Growth in inflation. Growth in mortgage payments. Growth in fuel bills. Growth in crime. Growth in NHS waiting times. Growth in court backlogs. Growth in far-right rhetoric. Growth in government lawbreaking. Sign me up to that coalition.

"'Move on outta here. Go on, pack your bags.' I think that's the part she should have played." Founder of M People, and fierce critic of the Conservative government, @themike_p reacts to Liz Truss using the chorus of his song 'Moving on Up' at the party's conference.

So Truss calls all her critics ‘anti-growth’. Because petulant name-calling is a top response to anyone worried about bills, Brexit, the environment, huge govt borrowing, unfunded tax cuts, shredding of the manifesto and cuts to public svcs. Not a proper grown-up, let alone PM.

No-one in Labour should try to outflank the Tories on migration. You can't be more right-wing than them and once you've accepted their framing, you've already lost. We should steadfastly defend the rights of refugees and all migrants, not join in attempts to demonise them.

For 4 years when I was US Editor I went to endless Trump rallies where we’d be accused of being ‘enemies of the people’ - the ‘we’ were the media, but also ‘liberals’, civil servants, environmentalists, the swamp, the think tanks. All felt a bit familiar in B’ham today
Labour, the SNP, Lib Dems, Unions, environmentalists... I'm a bit worried the anti-growth coalition makes up 70% of the country.
