"lied to" is a bit much - they are map-projections, and since there's no way to show a true map (Imagine flattening a rounded orange-peel into a perfect rectangle. Can't be done), some projections become more used than others. Mercator is a commonly used one.

You have a point. What I should have said is that I don't believe there could be any more important comparison of continents than their relative size to one another. This is what we want to know when we look at a map.

Well - no map can ever tell you, only a globe can - everything else gets distorted! A fair point of criticism when it comes to Mercator, is how it enlarges Europe and North America, in drastic relation to Africa and in general the Equatorial world, creating an unfair bias.
