Doing a bit of work on the impact of #COVID19 on disabled groups in UK. What's astonishing is what little thought/consideration disabled groups have been given in policy and media in the whole pandemic. V surprising given ~1 in 5 people in GB are disabled @IndependentSage

How can Boris Johnson and Chris Whitty tell the public that school children have the highest infection rates among all age groups in this country (+ that they’re worried about #OmicronVariant) BUT completely omit ANY covid safety protections *in schools*? #DowningStreetBriefing

Today's briefing appears to be an exercise in doing the bare minimum while seeming to signal that our response is in someway proportionate to the potential threat. Let's be clear- this response doesn't even go far enough to deal with delta, far from dealing with anything beyond🧵

There is another layer of complexity for the immunosuppressed population where many have poor responses to current vaccines even with 3rd doses. We need tighter rules. @sajidjavid
#DowningStreetBriefing at 5pm on #OmicronVariant. 2 cases have now been identified in UK; our govt needs to move fast. But it's NOT enough to have Red List and PlanB on its own. We need PlanB+ incl #facemask mandates, WFH if poss, rapid booster rollout, ventilation & more testing

This is a race against time; we need to remember #DeltaVariant spread very rapidly and that was at a time where we had some covid restrictions in place. Currently we have NO national covid mandates/protections; no mitigations in schools or public areas. And daily cases are v high

It's NOT true that "UK's plan against #covid has been working" as PM has just said. But it's good that PCR tests will be required for returning travellers regardless of vaccine status, tightening of facemasks in public places & a boost to booster campaign #DowningStreetBriefing

And how can Boris Johnson and Chris Whitty report that the highest infection rates are among school children, but NOT (re)introduce mitigation/protection measures in schools? Boosters necess & will protect adults but what about children? 2nd doses for teenagers? @IndependentSage

If now is not the right time for #PlanB (with #OmicronVariant with it's vaccine-escape properties, v high daily cases in UK and incomplete vaxx coverage), then when?? Nothing about encouraging people to work from home (where poss). And unclear whether #facemasks will be mandatory

It's surely time to put measures in place to ensure that any omicron outbreaks we now have aren't within an environment where Rt>1? This mistake was made with delta. This isn't panic, it's precaution, we're dealing with the unknown here...plan B as a minimum please @sajidjavid
We have been made aware by @UKHSA of two UK cases of the Omicron variant. The two cases are linked and there is a connection with travel to southern Africa. These individuals are self-isolating with their households while further testing and contact tracing is underway.

It's not just the emergence of #Omicron - a more transmissible & possibly vaccine-resistant variant which is problematic (given more indoor socialising, low children's vaxx and incomplete booster protection); it's also that it's arriving at a time when cases are 50,000/day in UK

Consistently high daily cases since since July when the government lifted ALL covid-protections has had a huge toll on public health - 45K hospitalisations and *over 6000 deaths* in 60+ age gp since 1 July. But high cases AND no mitigations also means spread of new variant faster

It's important to know how widely B.1.1.529 has spread but UK govt need to take early and preventative action now. Johnson's mass infection strategy since July 19 was NEVER ACCEPTABLE, but combo of no covid protections +incomplete vaxx coverage could have devastating consequences

Spoke to @SkyNews earlier about the Nu variant (B.1.1.529). Among other things, we discussed the decision to redlist & I highlighted how exemplary S African communication has been and that we need to support S Africa now.
