Portugal went from 34% vaccinated to 84% vaccinated in three months. In that same timeframe the US went from 46% to 54%.

Yes: to be clear, more waves will come. Europe has not attained COVID-zero. But if Portugal, at 85% vaccinated, experiences a per-capita death toll anywhere close to what our summer wave has been, then something has gone horribly wrong.
I agree it's a bit of a disaster, but remember *last* summer when the South was blowing up and the North and Europe were not. Now remember last winter?
Important to keep in mind that Portugal has the third highest percent elderly population in all of Europe. There is some reason to believe that vaccine efficacy decreases in the elderly. If they can get boosters to those people, they should be good.
