In the garment industry, many improvements in workplace conditions have been lost through outsourcing and third-party contracting (in North America and overseas). Conditions at more than a few modern clothing factories are not much better than conditions at the Triangle factory.
Today 1911 was Triangle shirtwaist factory fire, New York City, which killed 146 people, one of worst industrial disasters in American history and led to laws for better labor standards and working conditions:

100 years ago, a Chilliwack chief - William Sepass - sat down and carefully sketched out this stunning map of his community & details like the location of "Catholic Tommy's House" & local Indigenous villages dating back hundreds of years. tinyurl.com/44ec8dmv

The book is out! The first negotiations book written by a negotiator for workers. Rules to Win By uses the lens of union negotiations but is applicable to any setting where the working class pulls up to win against today's hyper greedy corporate class. 1/10

Been thinking about Ray Materson's embroidery. While in prison, he embroidered tiny pictures (under three inches tall!) from unravelled socks. He's out now but is still stitching. An exhibition of his art is currently on at the Andrew Edlin Gallery in NYC, closing tomorrow

The fact that our CEO is being forced to testify in front of the senate for union busting is so unreal. Who knew that a little over a year ago, when my store started to organize, it would contribute to holding a billionaire accountable to any degree. Unionize your workplace.

Some local labour news! Science World now has a union. Workers have successfully voted to join CUPE 1004, which also represents some workers at the Parks Board and PNE. Certification approved at the labour board yesterday.

Events like this make #Diversity and #EDI initiatives lose credibility. Especially when employee participation in the survey was voluntary, and when those who did participate were told that their data would not be personally identifiable. #HR #Management #canlab

This is a remarkable achievement. Most Canadian sports that don't get "enough" medals or placements fall into a spiral of continually declining funding that is difficult to reverse. Less funding = less resources for coaches, equipment, etc that could generate better results
Friday reminder that the two least funded sports from @ownthepodium this year provided a World Champion (ski jumping) and a world champs bronze and overall bronze (skeleton). Maybe it's time for a change to the system that's still claiming success from 2010.

Today I learned that Claes Oldenburg had to denounce unauthorized copies of his 1966 edition of 100 fiberglass baked potatoes, identifiable because "the painting of the skin lacked subtlety." (Dying at his indignant annotation of this photo: "this is an unauthorized potato")

The best way for travelers to handle strikes is to view them as a cultural experience. In Marseille, I was surrounded by thousands marching in the streets. I enjoyed photographing striking parents with kids on their shoulders—and learned firsthand what labor action is all about.
Travelers to Europe are largely free from coronavirus restrictions, but they may have to contend with another challenge: navigating disruptions as airline, railway and bus workers walk off the job over low wages and labor conditions. nyti.ms/3KG9JJV

"Your and your coworkers’ willingness to go along with what you know are unreasonable expectations is the thing that allows your company to keep imposing them." Excellent perspective from @AskAManager #Management #HR #business #WorkLifeBalance

Impressed to see 2 CUPE 561 picketers at the Fraser Valley Express stop at Lougheed transit loop this morning (FV Express is run by @BCTransit, not Translink). Pacing a 40-foot strip of pavement isn't exciting, but very important for visibility of this dispute @CUPEBC #canlab
