I received another disappointing un-fundable score for my @NIH grant today. I am privileged, and I realize no-one wants to hear me complain. Just sharing to make the point that everyone experiences this kind of feedback, and that it never stops from stinging! 1/3

The most frustrating part is the feeling that you addressed all the concerns and yet the score remains the same. Will have to wait for the written comments... But I can only imagine that this is much tougher to take for young investigators. 2/3

But there is hope! My first grant after cloning PIEZOs was triaged. But @NIH did ultimately fund the work that showed PIEZO2 is the principal mechanosensor for touch and proprioception. Message: stay positive, don't doubt yourself, and keep trying. 3/3

Maybe this is your situation? ;-)
My grant score just posted and it's showing a designation I have never seen before: "No Discussion" (or something like that). Kudos to NIH for this new mechanism to streamline grants that are so inarguably strong that "No Discussion" was required. I guess I just await the NOA?

You know, after the Nobel Prize, many would simply go to celebrate for a long time (or maybe forever), since they are already in the Pantheon, but look, you continue to do science. Great! and congratulations again on a fully deserved award!

You would think this is the case, but no Nobel laureate in science ever does that. If anything they seem to feel even more professional pressure than before.

They can change their bio into “turning discovery into questions” 🙃

Now I feel so much better about the 3 triaged grants this year 😀

Thanks for sharing the inspirational view. Your PIEZO triag is even more inspiration to me!

Sharing this does wonders for investigators young and old who are discouraged by rejections of grant apps and manuscripts. Thank you!

Also, maybe it was a bad idea. :-)
