People really seemed to enjoy this, so I've decided to start a series of posts every Friday with #oceanasgaeilge, where I share fun ocean sayings/translations in Irish! Please RT if interested, as I would love to see more Irish language representation in the online sci community!
In Irish we have a great elasmo-saying for people who are very laid back: "Chomh sámh le liamhán gréine" means "As chilled out as a basking shark". 😎 I think I'll have to start using that one in English too. 🦈 🇮🇪 #shark #baskingshark #gaeilge #elasmobranch

#OceanAsGaeilge 🇮🇪🌊 "Liamhán ceann casúir" is the Irish for hammerhead shark! 🔨🦈 (ceann = head, casúr = hammer) There's only ever been one sighting of a HH in Irish waters, in July 2019 when scientists from @MarineInst spotted a smooth HH 160km off the southwest coast! 🇮🇪

#OceanAsGaeilge 🌊🇮🇪 "Gobadán cosbhuí" is the Irish name for the purple sandpiper, though it literally translates to "yellow-legged sandpiper" 🐦 Purple sandpipers breed in the arctic in summer & winter along the N.Atlantic, so now's the perfect time to see them around Ireland!

#OceanAsGaeilge 🌊🇮🇪 Muiríní is the Irish for scallops! Ever wonder why you never see scallops in tidepools? Some bivalves (eg.mussels) can seal their shells to trap the water needed to survive low tide, but scallops can't! That means they can only survive totally underwater🤿

When are books and movies written and directed by men going to stop with this disgusting trope of women needing to be the victims of sexual assault in order to become the strong version of themselves they inevitably turn into after the assault?

It's *disgusting* and unnecessary but so fricken common and I'm so f*ing sick of seeing it. When and why did this become such an accepted storyline??
