This thread will be dedicated to the victims of the mass shooting in Buffalo. This is Ruth Whitfield, 86. Her son, the former Buffalo Fire Commissioner, said she was on her way from visiting her husband in a nursing home and stopped at the store to get something to eat.

Pearly Young, 77, was killed today in #Buffalo shopping for groceries. For 25 years she ran a pantry where every Saturday she fed people in Central Park. Every. Saturday. She loved singing, dancing, & being with family. She was mother, grandma, & missionary. Gone too soon 🕊

Glad to flex the Star Wars political science muscles with @byrdinator in our new @HothTakes episode. We covered a lot of ground, from galactic ballot initiatives to Jedi enforcement of Republic laws. Turns out there are no easy answers to some of these Qs! hothtakes.wordpress.com/2022…

Just getting around to watching some of the China competition bill conference committee meeting from today, and a couple important comments from lawmakers indicated they are serious about including the House's human rights provisions in the final package. (thread)

House Foreign Relations Chair Gregory Meeks noted several key differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill: the first one he went out of his way to mention was the House's inclusion of legislation to prioritize Uyghur refugees and help Hong Kongers.

Rep. Ted Deutch, sponsor of the bipartisan bill granting priority status to those fleeing Xinjiang, also said he is "eager to work with my colleagues on the committee to ensure" it is included in the final bill. “Competing with China requires a strong defense of our values."

ah, the House committee Meeks chairs is foreign affairs, not foreign relations. (I'm blaming that slip-up on the fact it is almost 10pm)

Anyway, not clear if it will make it into the final version, but it's a good sign to have Meeks mentioning it as one of the first items he is focused on. (Also worth noting that the Biden administration could unilaterally grant Uyghurs priority refugee status, but hasn't.)

You give the Senate a double digit number of votes and they lose their minds. Over here this is Wednesday

Today's Uphill has an item on @nuryturkel's book, No Escape, which is out today. The book is gut-wrenching. Turkel hopes it will heighten awareness of the genocide in Xinjiang. "I believe in the power of personal storytelling," he says. Read more here: uphill.thedispatch.com/p/hou…
