THREAD: meet my brother
Unsurprisingly, being locked down over Xmas and New Year turns thoughts to family – and to my brother who died almost 14 years ago in a motorbike accident when he was 39.
Another jump in admissions today, to 1,795, up 41% on last week.
The weekly growth rate remains around 33%, but in the South West is double that, both for admissions and beds.
Beds occupied are now over 11,000, though ventilator bed growth is much slower fortunately.

Haven’t reviewed all recent studies. Much of best real world US data on #COVID19vaccine protection in children comes from Overcoming COVID-19 study, led by the amazing Adrienne Randolph and including our own @RileyKids@iurwc faculty member, @s_bhumbra.

I am gonna ping @ChandyJohnLab & @SalliePermar, two pediatric infectious disease experts, to see if they have updates on real world effectiveness studies
UK cases reach 309,000 cases per day affecting currently over 1 in 20 people as this fifth wave of omicron BA5 shows no signs of slowing and hospitals filling up steadily. Still no signs of advice for the public - as U.K. supposedly the first to beat Covid @Join_ZOE
Previous studies suggested that teaching kids chess improved a range of outcomes, from math skills to logic to academics.
But it just isn’t true. Now, two large randomized trials, one in the UK & one in Bangladesh found no other benefits to learning chess. (except ♟ is fun!) 1/
Excellent piece in the @BylineTimes by @sashajourno on the use of graded exercise therapy in patients with long COVID- this can be harmful for those with post-exertion malaise. Given there's no evidence to support this & potential for harm, why are patients being advised this?
I have spoken to the Prime Minister to tender my resignation as Secretary of State for Health & Social Care.
It has been an enormous privilege to serve in this role, but I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience.
A minister actually said this. He criticised the whistle-blower for revealing the PM had been lying and reminded Lords to also take to account of the fact that Pincher did not repeat his behaviour for seven months. As if NOT putting your hand down peoples pants is an achievement.
Tory Peer, Lord Cormack: "the continuance in office of the present PM is incompatible with the maintenance of standards in public life".
Cabinet minister, Lord True asks Lords to give Pincher credit for NOT sexually assaulting anyone for a whole seven months.
Astonishing. ~AA
This week, Special Covid Leave rules, which helped NHS staff isolate when infectious, come to an end. A very shortsighted move which will lead to more staff sick with Covid & long Covid, & more patients with hospital acquired infections. More detail here: doi.org/10.1136/bmj.o1637
1,795 (One Thousand, Seven Hundred And Ninety-Five as they'd say on the vidiprinter) English COVID admissions, up 41% from the value reported last Tuesday. Seven-day average now over 1,500, beds occupied over 11,000.
People don't understand the threat because they can't see it. Get a fog machine and demonstrate what airborne spread looks like. Best if the fog fluid is scented.
Every time he's in a mess, Johnson seeks Zelensky's protection. Which happens a lot.
From Zelensky's point of view, Ukraine gets more money or weapons each time, so happy to play along.
Glossing over that this is Johnson spending money to protect himself.

Drinking water remains the number one problem in #Mariupol. #Russian occupiers have connected only 502 houses to the water supply. It means just 1.35% of all homes have access to water, which is around 5% of the city’s current population

This morning I have written to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards - because No 10 keep changing their story and are still not telling the truth.
