Thank you. It’s amazing that science and academia are ruled by hierarchies, fear, and intimidation rather than collegial and community spirit. Blatant abuses are a symptom of that distorted system and culture. We have a long way to go to get at the roots of it.
Academia writ large has largely avoided implementing real change post #metoo. Stories like this one are not as rare as we would like to pretend they are. We need to support independent journalists like @mbalter who serve as the public’s watchdog. #pressfreedom
There's a certain very disturbed archaeologist who thinks that a legal settlement in a lawsuit with a reporter gives her cover to create thinly disguised aliases and use them to attack witnesses in the case and defame the journalist, a violation of the agreement...
When you see a harassment case becoming public, know: *lots* of people have known, for years. Threats of lawsuits have kept them from speaking publicly. Institutions knew too, looked the other way when hiring, then aggressively protected the harasser.
At Cambridge & Toronto Universities Orchard targeted female students for affairs. Women say they were terrified of academic & career reprisals if they rejected him.
A female colleague says he abused & threatened her in a drunken rage.
Women have complained about Prof Andy Orchard’s sexual behaviour & drunkenness for 20+ years.
He’s now Prof of Anglo Saxon, at the world’s top-ranking, university, Oxford & a successor to JRR Tolkien who held the same position when he was writing Lord of the Rings.
Cw // sexual assault
Aberdeen uni held an investigation into the man who sexually assaulted me and my friend and they are refusing to share the outcome with us. They knowingly allowed a man charged with 2 counts of sexual assault on campus. They did not warn other students.
LSU students protesting LSU’s failure to investigate allegations that former French grad student Edouard d’Espalungue d’Arros raped, sexually assaulted & sexually harassed several women while admins dropped the ball on investigating
"I'm not going to let [you complain about me] happen. I'm going to destroy you"
"Throughout his life he's been protected by the institutions... This code of silcence we've kept is partially bc we've been instructed to"
Evidence of endemic sexual misconduct & coverups in UK unis
A two-year investigation by @AJIUnit reveals how British universities are failing to protect students from sexual harassment by their lecturers, allowing them to carry on teaching even where there are multiple complaints over many years.
Survivors of abuse don't need more "allies." They need active accomplices who will really stick their necks out, to the point of taking risks if necessary, to help them get justice and neutralize their abusers so they can't hurt others. #MeToo#bullying
"Endogamy, one of the evils of Spanish universities. An article by Susana Vega-Gonzalez"
Not just an evil of Spanish universities: the practice of academic positions being rigged to favour friends, even if they are not the most qualified candidates, is common everywhere.
@EmmaWillard and @TroyNYPolice lied in 2 newspapers in 1998 saying they investigated and found no crimes.
I was raped by their staff and they lied to my parents about why I had to leave school. My parents paid $50k for my safety and care. I'd say EWS HATES KIDS & LOVES MONEY.
