We've reached the grim milestone of 170,000 deaths from COVID-19 (COVID-19 on the death certificate) today. How many families wouldn't be grieving loved ones this Christmas had the government taken even the most basic measures to protect the public?

So someone I know with a double lung transplant died today from Covid. She’d been forced back into work once furlough had ended. But it’s all ok because @sajidjavid told CEV people in October that the official shielding programme was over #cev #wecount #covid

Starting to get a bit annoyed about this... Let us be clear: If we are forced into heavier social restrictions (e.g. circuit breakers/lockdowns) the BLAME sits more with those who supported Mass Infection, and NOT on those who tried to stop the spread. Rant 1/5

Dear Allegra Stratton On the day you partied, my mother called me, breathless and feverish. I didn’t visit. On the day you joked, she was admitted to hospital. I didn’t visit. As you celebrated Christmas, she died without family by her side. I promise you, it wasn’t funny.
EXCLUSIVE: Video obtained by ITV News shows Downing Street staff joking about a Christmas party on 18th December last year. No 10 has spent the past week denying any rules were broken. This new evidence calls that into question.

this is very damning... and tbh having a good laugh about their party while London & SE were in lockdown, people were making huge sacrifices, the NHS was straining and alpha was allowed to spread everywhere else is pretty fucking shit. itv.com/news/2021-12-07/no-1…

My interview today with @ConorJDillon at DW on hopium, copium, the threat posed by omicron & why countries need to act pre-emptively now, rather than adopting a 'wait and see' approach: m.dw.com/en/milder-omicron-n…

Another article that yawns at hundreds of dead kids.
New York City has a lot of unnecessary policies, and a lot of bad ones. This manages to be both at once, inspiring plenty of parental ire. reason.com/2021/12/07/de-bla…

wow- if you're seriously more concerned by the tone by which someone calls out a lie, than our actual government ministers lying in the middle of a pandemic(!), then I think you really need to rethink what you're doing in a job where you're supposed to be serving the public.
Conservative MP Nicki Aiken says calling MPs liars "filters down into the public" and causes distrust, "there's a huge difference between debate and abuse" MPs need to encourage ministers "to tell the truth", Labour MP Dawn Butler says bbc.in/3lFPFKh #PoliticsLive

Ahem.... @educationgovuk @nadhimzahawi? Any chance the DfE bring school policy in line with recommendations from WHO, CDC, and evidence? Self-reported long COVID has doubled in children in 4 months because of a policy of mass infection in schools. 77,000 children affected.
Replying to @WHO_Europe
The use of masks and ventilation, and regular testing, should be a standard at all primary schools and vaccinating children should be discussed and considered nationally, as part of school protection measure @hans_kluge

Travel restrictions to slow import only buy you time if coupled with measures to reduce transmission as well. No point slowing import, if you then allow massive spread from the cases that do get through (as we have done) by doing very little to contain spread.

Omicron rapidly rising in the UK now- yes it could've been slowed - both through reducing import by pre-screening and quarantine at borders across all countries *and* measures to reduce domestic transmission. We did neither.

Now, we're on track for omicron to become dominant in 3 weeks or perhaps even less. Given this is likely, what are we doing? Relying on boosters alone, waiting & watching, and considering small incremental steps. This isn't how one prepares for a crisis.
Numbers of COVID cases likely to be the #OmicronVariant are increasing rapidly in England SGTF data indicate 994 likely cases, including 2% of swabs from 4th December This gives a worst case scenario of ~2500 cases so far and an R-value of 3.47 (CI 2.75 - 4.40) Detail in thread

And as I've said before, regardless of severity, the impact on health services of a variant that's spreading so quickly could be huge. This is basic epidemiology. I for the life of me cannot understand why precious time is being squandered, as we head into a potential crisis.

MHRA? JCVI? Millions of children being vaccinated in other countries. When will parents in the UK be given a choice? Currently remote schooling my daughter because of a large outbreak in school. In-person education isn't feasible unless we take measures to reduce transmission.
