The screenshot attached to this post is from my first Open Source project. UseBB was a forum application written in PHP 4 using a MySQL database - a then (already) enormously popular combination. I started working on it in 2003.

I have to say, working without too much of a rigid plan and being able to experiment made this a fun hobby project. I discovered how to write a web app from scratch (before most frameworks existed) and got to build a small online community of contributors.

When I started I worked on a web CMS from scratch, and we were investigating best practices for front-end templating, for routing, for searching, for fast file management, etc. Lots of fun finding new solutions, learning new technologies and their limitations, and testing them.
